Default Brake Light Problems

My bike is an 09 Ultra and when I press the rear brake foot pedal, I get brakes but no brake light. When I pull the front brake lever, I get brakes and I also get brake lights. What kind of trouble shooting should I do to find out why I dont have lights when I hit the rear pedal?

Replace your rear brake light switch.

Pull the wires from the rear brake switch (if you change it, you'll have to pull them anyway) and jumper them together. Use a paper clip or similar wire. Turn on you ignition switch and if the brake light is on, that confirms the switch isn't doing its job but the wiring is OK.

Thanks for all the info. I will check with my dealer on the recall for the switch. I have heard of them melting, and I didnt have any issues until we rode out to Sturgis from Michigan in 95 degree temps. When we were coming back from Devils Tower, my brake light stayed on, and cruise would not work. Sounds like that was the begining to the end of the switch. Everything has worked OK until today.
