Question 2002 Ultra EFI Throttle Cable Help

While cleaning the bike I noticed the front throttle cable seemed a little sloppy. I also noticed the throttle grip had to be twisted a little before tension is felt. I messed with the adjustment under the boot near the grip and don't know if I messed it up or not. How do I make sure the adjustment is proper before riding. The bike seems to to idle fine but don't want to take chances. Didn't mess with anything else. Any suggestions. I have the factory manual. Not much help there.

I have found that if there is too little slack in the throttle cables it is more difficult to control things smooooothly! You're not taking any chances, except perhaps missing those last few percent of full throttle.

As for your manual, both my 1990 and 2011 books have a section entitled Throttle Control. Go take a closer look!

I took some slack out of mine too,but the manual goes into a sort of confusing deal with adjusting the cruise cable at the same time. Didn't want to go too far with the throttle and botch up the cruise,so I left some slack in it.

And check the play with the bars turned. Make sure the throttle doesn't stick when the bars are in the left and right side fully locked position. A couple of years ago I had a rider in class who could not control their throttle. Came to find out it was sticking when the bars were turned. That's a safety issue.

Default Throttle

I turned the front wheel fully to the left and right and worked the throttle. Doesn't seem to be sticking. I am taking the bike to get inspected after work today. I'll let you all know if it works properly. Thanks for the replies.

Took the bike to get inspected and the throttle worked but didn't get to use the cruise control. It started to rain. It still has a little more play than I would like. I don't know which way to turn the threaded part of the cable to take up some of the play. Anyone got any ideas?

Read you manual, as per my post #2! It's all there.

Default Throtle Adjustment

Got the throttle taken care of. Stopped at the local Harley Dealer and they did the adjustment in about two minutes. I noticed the mechanic adusted both cables at the same time. I was only messing with the front one. The throttle is perfect now. Thanks for the replies.

Thumbs up

Great news - just occasionally a dealer does good!
