My 2000 Ultra has gotten real jerky the past few months so today I pulled the cover off to look at the compensator and it seems to have some wear but really don't know how to tell. Don't want to spend the money if I don't have to but I will if necessary. It also has a knock for a few seconds on that side when I start it up the first time in the morning.

Did you attempt to adjust the primary chain first?

There is no test for the compensator itself, just look at any worn areas to determine if it seems excessive. I'm sure you could put a micrometer on it and check the thickness of the lobes, but have no idea where you would get the wear limits from...

The compensator springs can get weak, after some time. To measure the springs you would need a spring compressor with gauge mounted on it. Again, not sure where you would get one of those, maybe some one else will come in and tell both of us.
