Default Doing S&S 97in BB soon, what else to do?

Am having the 97 S&S BB kit put in my 99 Electra Glide, just turned 60k miles, is a carb bike, had the cam chest done 20k miles ago with SE 204 cams. Any of you engine guys out there have any other suggestions while she is torn down? I plan on keeping the bike a long time, I don't hot rod it, just want more power, me and the wife just got back from the Smokey Mountains, loaded 2 up I was wanting more power going up the mountain roads. Thanks

I did a 98" Hillside BB set up, you'll like it. While you have the heads off, you should have some work done there to take advantage of the BB. What compression?

First thing I would do is to call S&S and find out the dome volume of the kit pistons; I suspect it is -4cc. Then find a compression calculator and run the calcs; the BigBoyz website has a good one. I believe if you do that, you will find that the SE204, while not a bad cam, is not the right cam for you build. I would strongly consider the S&S551 or something similar to replace the SE204 cams.

The OEM '02 heads will not accomodate higher lift cams like the 551. So, if you have an extra $200 or thereabouts, look around for a set of take off '06 or later heads; they flow much better than the OEM '02 heads, the valve springs will accomodate higher lift cams and they don't cost as much as a street port. Use a .030" MLS head gasket to add about .3 points to compression and tighten up the squish a bit. You can have your heads ported for $600-$700 but if you don't have the spare coin, a set of later heads is an upgrade to the OEM '02 heads. JMHO

My bike is a 99 not 02, not sure if there is a difference, so 06 heads will just bolt on for better performance, no other work needed, my indy is doing the job.

I did the Rev-Tech 97" BB on my 01 MM injected Ultra. Had heads shaved 50,000ths and ported with 1.92 intake valves and 1.64 exhaust, beehive valve springs with .600 lift and Woods 575 lift gear drive cams. Pistons are KB 10.5 to 1 and a corrected compression somewhere around 10.1 ( haven't checked it in 13000 miles). Even with the MM injection, it pulls hard from about 1700 rpm's all way to 5800 redline. Running the Cobra FI2000R tuner with CVT Auto tune.

My bad on the model year; minor difference in intake valve from '99-'02 but the same head. Yes, '06 heads will bolt on for better performance; all you need is the '06 intake flanges. Of course, any used head should be taken apart, cleaned up, valves lapped into the seats and new guide seals installed.

I would definitely run the compression calcs; if you want to stick with the 204 cams, you will need to deck the heads about .020" to set chambers at 82cc and static CR about 9.7 which is as high as I woud go with 204s; actually, about .015" and 9.6 static would be safer with the 204s; they can get tweaky at 9.8 and a tuning challenge. I would seriously be looking at cam alternatives that would allow higher cranking and corrected CR but lower static. JMHO

What would change if I just did the bore kit and left everything as is, same heads, cams and all? Shouldn't it stay the same with the exception of larger pistons? Or use a thinner head gasket to correct compression? I am not a engine builder but have a race car and put engines together, I know a little about engines lol

Another reason in doing this is my rocker boxes are leaking, I have the silver engine, so by pulling the rockers off I am going ahead with the bore kit and a top end freshen, valve seals and whatever else it needs, am putting black jugs on the silver engine, I think it will look good. It gets confusing when so many people tell you so many different things, was told when I did a big bore the SE 204 cams would work good, now people say to chage them.....

Why not using S&S heads? there is a complete kit with BB, heads and cam.

Not trying to highjack but i'm in the same boat with my old '04 and thinking about S&S because you can't find heads for an Hippo build
