Default Luggage racks and tour paks...

In the market for a luggage rack and there are a couple of options out there. 1) the HD air wing full size or 2) the rack from Kuryakyn. What is the most popular out there. When installing the rack am I drilling into an ABS type plastic or a fiberglass lid on the tour packs?

i have the airwing and LED kit on my newer bike- my wife says the rear visibility is really good. ( FLHTC has no rear lights in tourpak).

and it "looks" nice

I usually don;t base my purchase choices on looks.

my previous FLHTC had the HD premium rack on it which was a little more practical

I believe both of these use the same mounting hole template

55635-87 is the number for the large Tour Pack Rack ... I have this model ( on several bikes ) and am happy with it ... Installation is quick and simple ... 4 holes to drill and once you've gotten past the "Oh my God I'm drilling holes in my $25,000 mototcycle" it's all downhill ... First use some masking tape positioned approximately where the 4 legs contact the top of the Tour Pack ... Position the rack squarely on the top and try to keep it relatively close to the padding of the passenger back rest ... Once you're happy with the position use a pencil to draw a circle around each of the 4 legs then remove the rack and find the center of each circle that you've drawn ... Use a small sharp drill bit to make each hole then use the recommended size for the "finish hole" ... Once you've drilled the holes remove the tape and install the rack using the correct bolts ( inserted from the inside of the Tour Pack ) with a bit ( small amount ) of silicone to ensure that no water gets in, and you're done ... You'll find certain luggage with built in fasteners ( Velcro straps )that will fit the added rack. http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J00244.pdf

I have the blacken Air Wing rack/with LED lights on my 2013 FLTRU. The foot print is slightly smaller than the premium tour pack rack. It a about 2 inches less narrow or deep. The larger luggage fits the premium tour pack rack better. I did a post on getting luggage for my Air Wing rack. You should be able to find it.

In my line of work I install products in fiberglass regularly, drilling holes in fiberglass has a technique that one uses so that you don't chip the fiberglass. Is the lid plastic or fiberglass?

Air Wing all the way. Wire the light *only* to be a stop light, much better (difference between run and brake is not that much, off or on - much better)

If you have the light installed, does it prevent you from hooking bungees on that part of the rail or can you get under it?

With the led light kit installed you really can't hook a bungee to the wing where it attaches to the 3 middle rails. What I have done is to route the bungee first to the back post underneath the rails and out the opposite side. Do that for both back post. Place you bag or what ever you need to bungee down on the air wing rack, take your bungees, go over the bag and attached to the front of the airwing. Stays nice and snug.
