Default 2014 FLHR Road King 650 Mile Review

2 weeks ago, I traded my 2011 Ultra Classic for a new 2014 Road King in Mysterious Red Sunglow. Why, I don't know, I've just always loved the look of the Road King. This one already had several things added to it by the dealer. Bassani pipes, chrome front end kit, chrome rider, and passenger floor boards, matching grips etc. The bike came with the optional linked/ABS brakes. I knew I was giving up some wind/weather protection, however the large wind screen while not as good as the batwing does give me a pretty nice pocket of clean air. I love the way this bike handles, it just seems to plant itself in the corners, and the lighter front end makes it very easy to handle at parking lot speeds. The power is a huge improvement over my Ultra which had the 96 motor. Since almost all of my riding is solo, and with the new easy open saddle bags, I felt I could give up the tour pack without it being too much of a hassle. So far I really love this bike, and have no regrets about giving up the Ultra. I only used the radio sometimes on the Ultra, and now if I need tunes, I just use my I-pod if on a longer ride. The longest ride I have taken so far is a little over 200 miles. The stock seat seems to be pretty comfortable, and it sits a bit lower than my Ultra did. The new bars are comfortable for me, after I adjusted them a bit by rolling them forward a couple of inches. So far, it's all good. Long live the King!

Good luck, put on a set of fork minted deflectors and you'll have plenty of protection.

great looking bike , i love that color !
i guess if you decide you need the extra storage you can take off the passenger back rest and add a tour pack , or just get a bag that fits on the passenger seat if you're going solo . always lots of options with the King

Good looking bike. I think that would be the color I would choose next.

Beautiful, saw one the same color at my local dealership. Loved it. Nothing like the King

How do you like seeing the road again throught the clear windshield? That is one of the reasons why I bought the RK.

Great bike!

Default Couple Of Questions

Are those the OE bars?

and

By "roll them forward a couple of inches" did you mean push them forward of pull them back?

Yes those are the stock bars, and I meant I had the bars pulled back a little bit from the position they were in when I bought the bike. This put me in a much more comfortable position. I do like seeing the road again, although I was perfectly used to the fairing. One of the best things is the lighter front end than the Ultra, it just seems to handle really easy. It seems like I can sort of flick it around in the corners with confidence.

Guess I'm gonna have to stop by the dealer and sit on one. Those bars look way taller than the older stock ones. BTW - nice looking ride!
