Default Bad Voltage Regulator or Stator???

Hey, I have a 2006 FLHX Street Glide (25K miles) and I'm trying to figure out if it needs a new stator or voltage regulator. I don't have a service manual and can't seem to find a definite answer on any of the forums.

I rode the bike to a friends house and it sat there for a few hours while we went to runs some errands. When I was riding the bike back the "engine" light came on and the volts seemed to be at 10 or so on the gauge. As I continued riding home the volts went back up to 14/15 and the "engine" light turned off (never had a battery light come on... just the "engine" light) but them came back on within a mile or so when I slowed down at a traffic light. When I got home I pulled the code and it was a "P0562". I erased the code and left it in the drive way (waitng on a friend to come look at it). When we went out to look at it (about an hour later) the bike wouldn't even start. I put a battery tender on it and now it will start but the lights dim and the voltage gauge stays at 0.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Kyle.

You need to get out the multimeter and run a couple tests. The stator check will require you unplug it and check the continuity and AC output.

If that is good, check the regulator by checking the battery voltage while the bike is running.

There's a "Stickie" in the Do it yourself section that will tell you how to diagnose your charging system. I used this technique three months ago and found that I had a shorted stator. Hope your problem is just a regulator or maybe just a bad ground.

Sorry for your trouble. 50 miles into a trip about a month ago my engine light came on and volt gauge was the same as yours. I went straight to a Dealer about 10 miles away. They had to put both Volt Regulator & Stator in. About 5 hours later sleeping on there picnic table it was finished. Total cost $777.00. Kind of thinking I need to also replace my starter now.

Good Luck.

Can someone send me a link with step by step instructions on how to check the Stator and Volage Regulator? I'm kind of a "newbie" to multimeters so it'd need to be pretty straight forward lol. I appreciate everyones help, sucks not being able to ride when it is so nice outside.

check basics first...fully charge and have battery load tested, check your cables at the battery and the grounds (battery/frame). this part needs to be good before you test the others. good luck
