Default 1998 Road King Low Beam and Side Lights Not Working

My 98 RK low beam and side lights aren't working but high beam does. Does this tell me the low beam filament is out? I am assuming if low beam is out then side lights won't work because they are wired to low beam side. Am I correct on this?

Not to hard to find out. Change the bulb and see. I had a similar problem, mine would all of a sudden go dim and the high beam indicator would come on for no reason. Changed the headlight bulb and it seems to be fine now. Funny thing is when it worked both high and low worked. It was almost like the two elements shorted together some times.

the low beam and the side lights ( what do you mean with "side lights", running lights or added lighting ?) are not "wired together" you may have unrelated problems or a common problem such as a fuse.

as above start with the bulb and testing the plug.

the rider above probably experienced the bulb filaments touching each other inside the capsule- it happens

So i changed the bulb...still not working...tested fuse...good...test headlamp plug and it tested good on high beam nothing on low beam...should i start at the switch on the bars or could it be the battery switch on the tank?

so power goes TO the handlebar switch, and from there either the high beam, or low beam.

you have proven that power is good to the switch and the high beam side...so the problem is in the switch....or the wire from the switch to the low beam side of the bulb.

does the plug for the bulb look burned or melted at all?

what about the side light problem you described ?

if you are stuck somewhere, you could swap the yellow and white wires at the plug and with "high beam" on...the low beam will be lit and you can as least go where you have to.

I'm betting it's the high beam switch. Had this happen to mine. High beam, turn signals, fender light, and speedo lights all worked. Low beam and passing lamps didn't. It was the switch.

What Danny said.

The lo beam wire feeds voltage to the passing lights so the switch is bad or the lo beam wire is broken from the switch.

That's for an 09. Can't swear to 98 wiring.

Service manual doesn't tell me much about replacing the switch.

Couple of questions:

1) Are the wires soldered onto the switch?
2) Do I have to remove the clutch before removing the switch cover housing?
3) Any good diagrams on replacing the switch?

Thanks.
