Question Questions about FLHTP bikes, biketronic kits

Im new to the forum, but i have been lurking awhile trying to get information.

My current Suzuki M50 is finally starting to get worn out, and im planning to use it in a trade for a used Street Glide later this month. The dealership currently has some incredible offers on used Police Glides (2011 models, under 20k miles). The police bikes cost $3000 less than the cheapest street glides they have on the lot (06 model), so Im really tempted to buy one of them instead, and install the biketronics stereo kit in the fairing.

I have a few questions regarding doing so that i need answered before i pull the trigger on it

do they have the HD security system/can one be installed?

Are the hockey-puck lids lockable?

How easily can the controls be swapped over to road king controls?

can it be switched to non-police tires?

Is the biketronic kit waterproof?

Whats the likelihood of the Biketronic stereo kit getting stolen?

how much should i expect to spend on basic repairs within the first year, Clutch-rebuild, brakes, tires etc?

is there any other issues i might have?

any help would be appreciated.

Here is what I can tell you based on my 09 FLHP:

do they have the HD security system/can one be installed?

>>If there is a FOB, you have security and if not it can be added. Mine didn't however I had it installed.

Are the hockey-puck lids lockable?

>>Yes, on the back of the saddle bag is where the lock is.

How easily can the controls be swapped over to road king controls?

>>I had factory cruise installed and that got me standard RK controls

how much should i expect to spend on basic repairs within the first year, Clutch-rebuild, brakes, tires etc?

>>I had the 5 and 10K service within the first year and paid standard shop rates...I think they were ~$300 each...

The radio I put on my 11 EG Police was a Sony marine unit I purchased from biketronics.

The first time it got wet is was toast.
Sent it to Sony for warranty(biketronics could care less about helping out) unit was less than 2 months old. Re manufactured unit worked well until I traded it.

It does.
A removable splash guard. Didn't help, moisture got behind it into the head unit.

no security system, there are aftermarket options besides factory, there are subtle wiring differences between P bikes and civilian ones, make sure you get the Police bike service manual

Are the hockey-puck lids lockable?
Yes they lock from the factory, the pucks can be swapped out for buttons, or there are dress up parts to cover the pucks

How easily can the controls be swapped over to road king controls?
ehhhh with or without radio controls? I took off a lot of my cop stuff except for the left bar controls, I like the P spec horn button better, YMMV

can it be switched to non-police tires?
yes, and if you buy it from a dealer and you ask them to put a 2 up seat on it they will insist on removing the run flats, if you try to get the tires replaced and there is a 2 up seat on it, they will not put run flats on it. I ran my run flats for a couple of years before replacing them

Is the biketronic kit waterproof?
resistant... to a point, proof... nope

Whats the likelihood of the Biketronic stereo kit getting stolen?
when in doubt take the face plate with you. they will steal your bags before they grab a radio given having enough time with your bike

how much should i expect to spend on basic repairs within the first year, Clutch-rebuild, brakes, tires etc?
that will be the LEAST of your expenses.... take that from someone that cloned a FLHTPI into a Classic, with lots of toys

is there any other issues i might have?

any help would be appreciated.
If you are buying a used Police bike, try to find out the history... what department had it, then go find a cop from that dept and ask them how well the bikes were treated.

Some depts treat their bikes very well, keep them clean, maintained, don't beat them, and some beat them like a red headed step child. buyer beware!

PS if you are going to start adding cruise, alarms, etc etc you might as well buy a civilian bike with it already installed, the P spec bikes are nice blank canvases, but the perceived savings can get eaten up real fast by tying to fit it with toys that came on civilian bikes. Price out a set of used bags, price out a good paint job, etc etc etc and the savings goes away real fast

Thank you for the information. im really torn between a 2006 street glide and a 2010 FLHTP. The mileage is the same (under 20k) but the street glide costs almost 2 grand more.

That Street Glide will also only have a 5 gallon gas tank and 5 speed IIRC. The police bike should have the 103 too.
