it is a coarse thread.

the thing to do with these is to line it up and go lefty...until you feel a "click"- at that point the threads will be aligned.

go righty and snug it up

Using a T-shaped allen wrench? Mine bonks the engine and won't let you line it up. Have to start the dipstick with my fingers instead. No big deal, but kinda awkward. Next time I'm at a swap meet I'll try to remember to look for a a T-handle set with a ball end.

Next up, how to read that dipstick. It goes in so nearly horizontal I can make it read high, low or normal depending on the whether it's face up, face down, or sideways.

A ball-end is nice for going around corners, but the design by necessity makes for very slight contact, so marring or stripping is extra-possible, especially with the torque allowed by a T handle

there are all kinds of way to do this, it should be considered that an allen wrench can always be cut so that you have an inch long piece.

insert that into the dipstick...and turn it out with the wrench of your choice, socket or open end- or fingers

Or you can get Allen sockets and the job is really easy. And you should always, always, start a bolt or nut by hand, not with a wrench of any kind.
