Had the same question about how to tell if it's a Gen 2. Called the company this week and spoke to a Dunlop rep. He said anything with a manufacturing date of 2013 or later is a Gen 2. Look for the date on the sidewall of the tire. It will look something like "1413" which in this case means it was built during the 14th week of 2013.

Commander II' are good performing tires too (and a little cheaper) but they don't have the NWW.

When I posted this, I already have used a set of what I guess is the first generation. Unbelievable tire wear and handling compared to the old 402's or OME tires on pre 2009 models. I got well over 18K on the rear and should get close to 25K on the front. So when I get the next set, I what to try the 2nd generation tires, and it sounds like SfChief did the leg work, and if I purchase a set made in 2013 I'm good to go.
Thanks for the information Jonnierock

Talked to my Dealer while ago, this "2nd Generation American Elite" as it is called on the Dunlop site has not been available to my Dealer yet, but they are making room for them with a tire sale right now on their current stock of Dunlops.
I am getting a pretty good deal on a WWW 408 for the front of my 'King Monday, maybe next time around this new tire will be in my area with some local reviews.
This new tire is not even in my Dealer's books - but I showed it to them on the Website.

not necessarily. the tire dealer may have a decent supply of the first gen. on hand.

nice to know that you can tell by the date code. now if they would just make an 18 inch version for the rear, i'd be set.

Does anyone know how to figure out the date code ? Is it stamped on the tire like 7/22/12 or is there some kind of coded number that has to figured out ?

I believe the last four numbers on the serial number = week/year produced.

Good thread, I have the 1st gen, will certainly try the 2nd when the time comes. Trouble buying online is you won't know the date until the tire arrives. I guess the high volume stores probably turn tires over pretty fast and should have gen 2

there will be a 4 digit number in the sidewall in a little box. it will look like 1213, which shows that it was mfg in the 12th week of 2013.
