Default Advice on Road King Purchase

Hi -
So years ago I was forced to sell my almost brand new Road King and I really miss having my bike. I can't afford and don't want to pay for a new one, so I am looking at used ones.

I would like to stay well below $10K and thus find myself looking at various years. IN GENERAL: Are there certain years/models to stay away from?

I did a nationwide search on Searchtempest and there are a ton of Road Kings out there for good prices with mileage under 25k, with good records and it seems a bit overwhelming, so I thought I'd ask the experts!

Thanks in advance!

Andy

Well below 10k limits you but if you can get an '02 up, you would save yourself some problems down the road.

I would try to stay above 02 just because of the availability of fuel injection controllers.with careful shopping you may pull it off.

Truthfully - I never thought that I could get what I am looking for either based on my knowledge from 5+ years ago about pricing, but take a look at Craigslist and Ebay "Buy It Now" prices if you have some time. I'm not saying that I trust all of these sellers, but overall the prices are a lot more reasonable that what I expected to be honest. I could certainly be wrong.

10K is a nice starting point, but most people don't beat baggers, so going over that shouldn't be a worry. The 07 and above have 6 speed transmissions. These have some noise problems, 5th gear. This noise is less of an issue on the King.
The five speed transmission on the 06 and earlier is reliable. The 88 engine is also reliable with the exception of a cam problem. Spring vs chain cam. The primary chain on these are also adjustable. The 07 and above have self adjusting primary.
Good hunting.

I realize you are kinda far from Houston, but you can jump a plane and ride it home :-) I just read an awesome post about a guy that did that just that....

Anyway for what it's worth .....

'04 = $9,500

08 - $8,300 (Dents in the tank)
http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/4383817085.html

05 = $10,400
http://houston.craigslist.org/mcd/4426774752.html

2010, 40K miles, $10500

Point is..... I think you should be able to get a really nice used RK for $10,000
