Default Intermitant electrical problem

Fiirst off,I have a 2012 SG with 10k miles on it. Recall voltage regulator was done at 5k. My problem is I am now beyond warranty and check engine and battery light are coming on and 11.5 volts showing but not all the time. Today rode 40 miles stopping and starting 4 times then the 5th time lights came on. No change when i increase rpms. Do I start with regulator.
Thanks in advance for your help. I am afraid to take it in because i can already see the dealership saying its fixed and problem popping up again down the road.

I had the regulator recall done on my bike as well. Wouldn't you know it 10,000 miles later I had the same symptoms you are describing. A new voltage regulator took care of it.

you need to check your stator output first

search for threads on the diagnostics in the electrical section of the forums

without diagnosis, you are guessing. that can be expensive

I have had all kinds of electrical problems with my 12 Heritage since my first week when the voltage reg starting messing around and replaced on recall. The bike's been back to 3 dealerships trying to get them to fix all the crap that's been happening including, speedo back light 4 or 5 times, new speedo, brake light switch stuck on, signals turning themselves on and off or not working, new right turn signal, kill switch not killing. My warranty is up in July and I am fed up with the bike going in about once a month for something electrical.

if the bike is stock then you ay have recourse if your State has a lemon law.

register your complaints with NHTSA

if you have 'custom" parts installed...it could be on you

Don't do anything until you've diagnosed the cause! It may well be the regulator, but you will find two Stickies in the Tech Electrical section with tips that should help confirm this, or identify what the problem is. You'll need a multimeter.

There are mods such as levers, grips, chrome caps but not once has a dealership refused to fix each problem under warranty.
