radar detector

Then I bought an Escort 9500, too, and I freaking love it. Saved my bacon in the cage a lot of times, but I've never tried it on the bike yet. I dont usually ride that fast, though...well, maybe sometimes...

If you don't take this factor into account when using a RD than you're not using it right. You are talking about "instant on" (IO) radar. A RD (I use a Valentine One) is not a free pass to speed without thinking.
If you are riding along in light or no traffic you don't want to push the speed because of this IO. If a cop is pointing his radar gun he's pointing it at you! However, in moderate to heavier traffic the odds are he's tracking someone else. Which means your RD will go off and you have time to "correct" your speed. When slowing watch behind you, many drivers don't have the info that you have and won't expect you to slow. Many times in the past I've kicked off the cruise when I get an alert and I see some sucker pass me and then get pulled.
And I use my RD in my car but not my bike. In my car I'm usually 8 or 9 over but on the Harley I'm usually at 1 or 2 over the limit.

I tore apart one of our old radar guns and salvaged the "front end," or transmitter side of it. Stuck it in a small plastic project box, built a voltage regulator for it, wired it up so it plugs into a cigarette lighter socket. Added a push-button on a long wire to activate it. It's usually in my car, but I have wire-tied it to the handlebars on the bike a few times.
It works great. Some guy comes screaming around you and you see a radar detector on the dash. Push the button and on come the brake lights. Next you see the driver's head turning every which way looking for the cop that isn't there.
Nowadays it's not as much fun because most Law Enforcement use lasers, hence very few radar detectors in use.
