Yes...it's called "letting the bike cool before wiping off"...duh.
Many have done it (not me) and, unless you use right tools/chemicals, you'll marr the finish (as found out). Can get the pipe/shield re-chromed, or replaced...only two choices now.
Run the bike until the pipe is warm then take 0000 steel wool and spray with WD-40 Then wipe pipe where stain is. You might need a little elbow grease and to redo a couple of times but this will take anything off a pipe without any damage...trust me I know....lol
`Just had a Harley helmet bag come out of my bungeed rear seat area, land on top of my rear pipe, and melted into a black and solid mess. It was rock hard and a razor knife got it off when it was cold. `Used some carburetor cleaner on a rag to get the fine stuff, and that pipe now shines like a ****** eyes on payday! Thanks Y`all for the cool tips!
Outstanding recommendation on the Easy Off. Worked like a champ on my heat shield. Had to apply it twice to a cold pipe but no problem. Let it set for about 25 minutes each time.
i hazed a heat shield with 0000 steel wool, and left some small fine scratches with a piece of copper, easy off oven cleaner works great, spray it on a rag (away from bike) dab it onto chrome let it sit(overnight for cold pipes) half hour warm and wipe it off.
