Windshield Mounting on Road King Custom: Need Your Experienced Feedback
Nowadays, all Road Kings come with a windshield. Detachable, but the mounts are already installed. For a brief time (2004-2007) HD made a RK Custom, which was "tougher" looking. Lower, beach bars, more relaxed riding posture, a lot less chrome, no windshield. That's what I have.
I'm looking to add a windshield. Even bought the kit to do so:

Seems easy enough. But when I went to install it, I noticed that where the top 2 bolts enter the nacelle, to screw into the forks, the nacelle is beveled. That is, there's a "bump out" around the top nacelle/fork holes that is not in the bottom holes. Like this:

(Not my nacelle, of course, as mine is on my bike. But you get the idea)
Anyway, the windshield hardware is straight. The "hole" at the top of the windshield bracket is directly above and in line with the "hole" at the bottom of the bracket. (The "holes" I'm referring to are the cutouts that mount to the rubber bushings on the bike). So these holes are directly in line with each other. But clearly, since the upper nacelle/fork holes have the bump-outs, they are NOT in line with the lower holes. Thus, the bushings are not going to line up and the windshield won't properly mate.
The obvious answer is, I need spacers. But the windshield mounting hardware kit didn't come with any. And the kit I bought is specifically for a RK Custom:

So what am I missing?
Can you RK owners post pictures of your windshield mounting hardware so I can see the nacelle, your bushings and how the windshield mounts?
And if there are any RK Custom owners out there, how did you account for this?
Thanks,
Steve

Just went and played with my 04 RK so I can answer your question.
Yes, mine has the same bump out on the top holes.
I popped the windshield off and set my lower legs on the top grommets. They set on there just fine. No twisting necessary.
I would say the nacelle is at a slight taper, tapering wider towards the bottom, so the grommets are equadistant top and bottom, roughly.
Having just replaced the windshield (using the old hardware) I can say the bracket mounting isn't the most precise, and I did fine tune mine on the bike.
