Default is dot 3 and 4 same as dot 4 hd

Is Valvoline dot 3 and 4 good to use for brake fluid in a street glide specifying dot 4?
Valvoline label states good for dot 3 and or dot 4.
thanks

Yes, it is fine. I used it for a brake fluid change in my previous bike that specified DOT 4 (Vulcan Voyager with ABS) with no problems at all.

DOT 4 and DOT 3 are chemically compatible. The difference is DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. So if your bike calls for DOT 4 I'd stick with it. DOT 3 will work but you'd be backing up with respect to the fluids capability. Make sense?

Walmart of all places has Prestone dot4 . Everybody says 3 & 4 is the same....so why is there a sticker saying to use 4? Ok chemically the same... But it's at Wally World for cheep!! Also does the name brand make any difference?

After the dot 4 has been opened up and poured out of container. It will go down hill from there and be dot 3. After it has absorbed moisture the boiling point comes down One reason u really should bleed brakes every year. Short answer dot 3 will work fine

they made dot 4 to handle newer brakes with small pads - they get real hot. likelihood of boiling is low but for the tiny difference in price I'd buy dot 4 and not take any chances. joe

You can use either, but as others had mentioned, I'd go with what the owners manual says...DOT 4. Oh and do not get it on your paint for sure.

Default 41 + years working on bikes is my qualifing experiance!

Best to not mix any of the DOT fluids. When a label claims to be good for different DOT systems it does not necessarily mean to mix it. DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid and can be use in a freshly rebuilt and clean dry DOT 3 or 4 system. But DOT 3 and 4 are petroleum based and can't be used in a DOT 5 because the rubber won't hold up to the fluid base.
I would avoid mixing the DOT 3 & 4 in the same system. May not be a problem but what is your life worth to you? Why take a chance? Don't mix fluids!
Flush thoroughly with denatured alcohol and dry before using a different fluid.

Only intelligent info on this post, personally I would change the seals and possibly the rubber hoses before doing this!
BTW, never use Dot 5 on an abs system.
