Cool a drinking thread....and after some thoughts on the matter.

A little Wild Turkey in your coffee is one thing.

Having a chug-a-lug from the un-mixed flask of Wild Turkey that has been in a saddlebag for 500 miles is like taking a swig of hot diesel (that's as best I can describe it) and is nasty.

Try this and report back on findings.

Nope-no more Wild Turkey-years of that (and his friends Jim,Jack,Pepe and Bud) is probably why I'm type 2 (sober 16 years now).Buckinfitch, those items are a little small. If I was carrying an insulin bottle/vile,they'ed be perfect. This pen is about 8 inches long.It fits in a soft lunch box type cooler,so I guess that's what I'll be using.Love the sponge idea-very clever.Got a few trips to make next month-one is 250 miles one way and the other is 500 one way.I think I can manage.....I'll have to.Regards to all....

A guy at work drilled a few small holes into the bottom of the saddle bag and filled it with ice. It drains slowly throughout the day. If you don't require one of the sides during your travels, I guess it's something to consider.

My bags get hot inside....1 from being black, and 2, from the exhaust. I went to apply chapstick one day out of my bag. Popped off the lid and poured it down my shirt!! Keep that insulin cool. Maybe a windshield bag. Good luck!

I'm a type 1 diabetic as well.
My insulin goes in the insulated side pocket of my Road Ready sissy bar bag. I freeze two 16 oz bottles of water to keep it cool during the ride.
My life depends on it so the saddlebag is not an option.

I have 2-1 exhaust and the left side is considerably cooler than the right (yeah, duh). Left always will be a bit less hot on all but true duals. If you have dual exhaust of any type, I'd find a way to carry stuff that cannot be cooked in a tour pack or some other containment not involving saddlebags. I use my detachable tour pack or rack for such stuff.

The various cooler or coolpack ideas are great, until some issue leaves you on the road longer then the ice lasts. Plus, you need a lot of ice to counteract all that heat.

Yes the bottom of the bags get hot (leather bags are worse), do not put trail bars with chocolate chips in the saddle bags!!!

But I find the tour pak stays quite cool even on the hottest of days. We rode all morning and at lunch stop I opened the TP to check the map. It felt like I had A/C going inside the TP. All of my stuff was the same temperature as when in the hotel room that morning.

That said, toiletries go in the left bag, but last thing in so they are on top. Wife has never complained about anything melted. But those chocolate chips were an issue for sure!?!?!?

I put a hand towel in the bottom of my bag & I also use the HD drop in bags. Never had any issue with heat.
