I had a squeak that was killing me...sounded like a ragedy child's tricycle squeaking. Checked all the heat shields and nothing..tightened every nut I could find.....then one day, I wiggled the exhaust bracket that's under the bike...think it screws into the back of the transmission----it had come lose. May not be ur problem, but just one more thing to check

Did not read all the thread--

Are you sure you are not hearing the dreaded (and normal) transmission jingle?

There is a noticeable tranny ringing that Harley says is normal.

At idle, just listen, then pull in your clutch... hear the difference...

Hope that helps.

Simple Question...dont ask how I know..Do you have the push button release on your gas cap. The noise it makes (If you got one of the bad ones) sounds exactly like what you are mentioning.!

Mine has done the same thing a couple of times. Every time it's been the nut underneath the fuel door that tightens down the lock mechanism. Open the door and check it to see if it's loose. I'd almost bet it is.

UPDATE!

Guys, I've stripped down everything in the top end, hammered all fittings and still no luck finding out what the heck is causing this. I'm getting crazier by the day Searching the net, theres lots of rattles and noises, but this youtube link from another rider some years ago is EXACTLY the noise mine is making....about 10 secs in. I don't think he ever got the cause of it, but someone out there must have a clue?

Any help appreciated.

I don't think that is a valve train noise. Primary?

That was pinging, the video even says that. If you have pinging, and many bikes do, you need to reduce the timing in that rpm range. If it's too lean it can also cause that, but my bet is on timing. Mine has done it since it was new and I've had to take out as much as 15 degrees from some cells to eliminate it. Nothing else worked. Now how you are going to go about fixing it is another issue that I don't feel like getting into now, there are so many choices.

My annoying rattle was the muffler bracket that was improperly welded to the saddlebag support. Finally found it after a bud said he could see my (2-1) muffler shaking.

I get the same thing about 2800 RPMs, it is push button on the gas door. It use to annoy me, but now I use it to know my RPMs.

Further update:.....

After mechanicalman's comments, I got to thinking.....and disconnected the fuelpak and ran the OE ECU.

Hey presto! instant improvement! Not 100%, but 99% better as far as I can tell.

I'm putting it down to a) bad map or needs updating or b) faulty fuelpak.

I have contacted Fuelpak and will update the thread with results. So glad it's not mechanical and that damn rattle has stopped .....for now at least.

Thanks to all that contributed thoughts etc, it all helped
