Teflon Tape is primarily a sealant for the threads ... that is it's intended use. However, the OP stated that the O-Ring is "chewed up". I'd consider taking a close look at the area that the O-Ring seals against. It is possible that the seating area has been buggered up by one of those "highly skilled and factory trained mechanics who generally make their living with a pencil" who was in a hurry to push it outside and pull the next one so he could go to lunch.

They are probably using some kind of loctite high temperature anti galling thread sealant. If you've screwed many steel bolts into aluminum all day you'd know why.
a search on here should show some DYI whining once a month about the threads in his drain getting all hosed up.
I bet it came out without almost turning your bike over!

Been wrenching on bikes/cars and around people who do the same a long time. Never have I heard of anyone using pipe tape on anything on a bike. That's a new one for me.
I'm not going to say it's wrong, but I have never had a leaking plug. Nor have I ever had a frozen one. I just do things to manufacturers spec.
To the OP - I would tell them to stop with the tape, change dealers, or just do it yourself and save money and aggravation.

kinda chuckled when I read that comment about nothing on a bike needs teflon tape. Then I pulled up the instructions for air shocks. step 11

Well Hell, one of the steps is to clean the drain plug and then use a high temperature thread sealant before installing....
