belt check

Remember, the pivot bolt for the swing arm isn't in the same spot as the front pulley, so the rear wheel moves a bit closer or further away from the pulley as the rear tire goes up and down. That's why tension settings vary between jacked up, on the jiffy stand, and seated holding the bike upright.

Check deflection:
• As part of pre-ride inspection.
• At every scheduled service interval.
• With transmission in neutral.
• With motorcycle at ambient temperature.
• With motorcycle upright or on jiffy stand with rear wheel
on the ground.
• With the vehicle unladen: no rider, no luggage and
saddlebags (if equipped) empty.

My manual said the same thing. Check the tension with rear wheel off the ground or with it on the jiffy stand with no rider or luggage. I checked it both ways and it came out the same at 3/4". Mine needed adjustment. The axle nut is 36mm. I bought the universal ratcheting wrench. It's thin, but I had to loosen the mufflers to get the wrench on the nut. It has a square hole to allow use of a torque wrench.

Using this tool allows precise tensioning, whatever guidelines you follow.
I built my own sturdier version from a 36mm boxed wrench. It stays permanently mounted and I never have a belt slack off, becoming loose or have an axle shift out of square alignment. In my view, the axle cam tensioners are a lacking design and have been the cause of a belt loosening.

Ok here's a curve ball ; I have a 2010 SG and a 2014 limited. I do all of my own work and have the factory service manuals for both..both bikes have a belt guard with an adjustment window..the marks on both measure the same...the 14 says they are each 1/16 and the 10 says they are 1/8...I have contacted Harley and they just said that's the way it is if it says so! This is a major difference and in my opinion could cause an unsafe condition if it should be 1/8 as I believe to be correct....when you get a chance look at a 14 and 09-13 bike

lately ive been wondering about that a lot so i took a survey
asked a couple techs they said just tight or something like they adjust it till its tight and there done...
checked out new bikes at the dealer and they were like guitar strings
now im more confused so adjust it now to were theres just a little freeplay ..just a teeny tiny bit but its there. ive heard too loose can cause damage but if its JUST SNUG not shure if this is harmfull???
