OK...what's the trick?

I had to remove the stock headlamp trim ring. Now, I can't for the life of me get the little spring hook into the slot in the mounting plate.

Even if I remove the spring from the ring, hook it through the slot, I can't then get the spring reinserted properly into the ring.

I can hook the spring behind the headlamp shell, and it should be OK. But I want to know the trick to get that dang thing into the slot!

 

youre not supposed to remove the 'old' (stock) ring. the new visored ring (or which ever style you chose) installs over the old one (or at least it does on the Road Kings)

 

Actually, the stock trim ring needs to be removed to replace the lamp. Anyhow, I am just trying to reinstall the stock ring.

 

your parts store should sell a cheap Headlight tool with a screwdriver handle and a hook on the end. this should help to hang on to the spring and install in where ever you want or need.
