Default shifter fork? bike stuck in first......need help

needing some advice and direction on figuring out why my bike is stuck in first, 1980 xls. what do i need to do to get into the problem?

You should probably buy a service manual! That is one of the best ways to stay on top of your maintenance issues. It also offers trouble shooting tips. You will need to pull the primary cover to actually inspect why the transmission stays in first gear. It could be that the shifter return spring is broken or the spring on the detent plate is broken, but with a service manual you will have a better chance of possibly spotting the problem other than finding the broken part laying out for all to see. Good luck with your sifter problem.

thanks buddy, i have a manual, but i'm haven trouble getting it back from a friend with the same bike....i'll start small and see what i can see.
