Default What Happened To First Gear?

When my bike warms up, I have a bitch of a time getting into first. It feels like it is not there anymore. Once I downshift all the way to 2nd, the shifter feels as if this is first. It makes starting off on a hill in the city a real pain in the neck. It feels as if you are in first until you release the clutch. Sometimes I can stomp the shifter and it will click it, but that is not something I want to do a lot. What are some things I can look at?
