Reverse dying

Mine was just replaced, under warranty. Motor was slowing up, then just died. I use mine everyday, out of the garage. Dealer told me the motor was $1500 alone, and charged me 1 hr labor. Had to wait for them to get the motor about 2 weeks. They installed as I waited. Glad I got the warranty. Paid for the entire warranty in one shot.

So, what's "going out" about it? Is the motor getting weak, or is the solenoid not driving the gear into the ring gear, or is the ring gear messed up, have you lost the bearings in the starter motor? I only ask because I recently had the reverse motor in my hand when I replaced my differential. The reverse didn't look like it was very difficult to work on. I've heard many people talk about the price of replacing a bad reverse and I don't understand why it is so expensive to do. We have a motor rebuild shop in town and I think when my reverse goes bad, I will see if they can rebuild the motor for me.
Its a high toque motor designed to spin very slowly. A starter motor is made to spin fast.. Once moisture gets in the motor the brushers crumble..And when you had the motor in your hand did you notice it was much heavier and larger that a starter motor...Harley starter motor runs about 3 or 4 hundred dollars, While the reverse motor runs 13 to 14 hundred. And thats without labor...

Simple to work on. I repaired mine a few times, and once had a pro rebuild it...The part[s] that go bad are the brushes, And it ISNT A STARTER MOTOR.

I could tell that it is a heavier motor, but, a thousand dollars heavier????? It's got to be worth at least trying to rebuild it if (when) it goes bad.

Yeah, you make a compelling argument for buying the extended warranty. If I had bought the extended warranty I wouldn't be doing the work myself either. Luckily, I enjoy working on my trike.

Knowing that the 'Reverse System' is a weak point on the Trike I purposely park so that it is seldom necessary to use. In fact I think I've only used it a half-dozen times on my 2014 [24,000 miles] and half of those times was just to demonstrate it to interested on-lookers on flat ground. I've never had to back up anything more than just the slightest incline: just slightly more than I could do straddling the Trike and pushing back with both feet.

This is an old report, but maybe, just maybe, if Harley started fixing known issues, their sales would not drop and they would not have to react this way.
