I have both. The eletric is one speed , slow but steady. The mechanical , I have Champion on 2 of my bikes, in reverse is as fast as first gear foward just depending how much you twist the throttle, plenty of power.
No grinding if you put it in first gear and then engage the reverse, just remember to put it back in neutral befor releasing the clutch to reverse.

Recently I had an MMD RG installed on my Ultra and it works very well, like another member wrote,if you want to avoid the gear grinding go from N into 1st then back to neutral and pull up the lever,I don't have to use the throttle, just release the clutch a little and the bike goes back slowly. When done push the lever down engage 1st and drive off.Should you forget to disengage RG and go directly into 1st an electric cut off kicks in and the engine will die preventing damages to the transmission. It's simple, works well,it's made in the USA and not expensive in my opinion.I didn't do the install but had an HD dealer do it and they told me it took them 6 hrs but the kit comes with a very detailed instructional DVD,all the needed tools to perform the job and it can be done by anybody who's got patience and basic mechanical skills. That guy wasn't me!
