Hi Folks,

I am in the process of considering a VRSC for my next purchase. Price wise I am around the 2002-2006 years. I know what I want out of the bike, and I know what these bikes are.

My question is, are they any known issues with these bikes that I should look out for when I check them out?

The original overflow tank had a problem with the nipple breaking off. Mine was replaced under warranty. Some 03-04 bikes had problems with the fuel flange, A handfull of 02s had powertrains replaced under a recall, but other than that, they're pretty trouble free.

 

I read some where that some model years had issues with the odometers not reading correctly or losing a digit, is that correct?

I am considering a gas tank replacement, I believe UE makes one that is really good.

 

A friend of mine has a 2006.He just replaced the front shock seals cuz one leaked a little but he does wheelies too so...It has 19,000 miles on it and it is FAST!!!.I tried him today,got up next to him and hit the throttle...Dusted my super glide very easily.I know what ya mean about the gas tank,when he first got his v rod and he needed to fuel up,he asked me "arnt you going to get gas?" I replied,"na,ill get gas on your third tank". The bike runs good and has no problems.It's governed for 9200 rpms and he pushes it there sometimes.He is not nice to it and it only asks for more fuel.

 

That's really cool. I am looking for something that is easy to ride descent distances and is still fast with character. I currently have an Aprilia RSV1000 which is piles of fun to ride, but after 50-60 miles you are ready get off. Also it's a project to ride.

I am hoping that the vrod is easy and quick to get on and off for descent distances 100+ Miles or so.

 

I have an 04 and love it (first bike). Put 12k on it last year without a single problem. I've read that some people have had issues with the triple sprocket bolt backing out causing major issues but it's easy to pull the alternator cover and check it's torque. Some had issues with oil seepage around the alternator cover as well but also an easy fix. It's definitely a solid bike. Check out 1130cc forums too, it's strictly Vrod chat. Alot of good info there. Good luck with your purchase!

 

I would suggest going with an 08 or later. They have 1250cc, 5 gallon tank, wider rear tire and a slipper clutch. I've had an 02, 06 and a 12 muscle and they were all great bikes.

 

I know that after 2008 there were some major upgrades, unfortunately my budget keep me at 2002-2004.

 

I have a 2004 with 33,000 miles on it. It is a good machine and I recommend it. When you are ready to buy, I suggest that you have someone familiar with V-Rods look at your potential purchase before you plunk your money down.

 

I have an 02 an love it AFTER changing the handle bars an getting a reach seat. I have a 30" inseam an the stock seat put me too far from the controls for my liking an the shape of the handlebars was uncomfortable for me. 02 an 03 have the 30T front pulley, which slightly hurts acceleration an helps highway mileage/lowers rpm's. 04 up have the 28T which is a little quicker but turns more rpm's on the highway.
