Default Seat removal

I love the way this article just ends so abruptly. It came from the forum home page.

Removing a Harley Davidson Seat (Easy Steps)
By HDForums Editors on March 29, 2010 3:08 PM
For Harley-Davidson motorcycles, gaining access to the battery and other parts means removing a Harley-Davidson seat. For most models, this involves unscrewing just one screw. However, with the VRSC models, also known as the V-Rod, accessing the battery, the air cleaner, and the carburetor is more complicated. Check out these instructions first before you struggle with the "hit and miss" method.
Remove Seat

Removing the seat on a V-Rod is the easy part. Simply lift the "starboard" (or right-hand) edge of the seat, as you face forward. The seat will pivot right up.

Removing the Covers

The more complicated task is to remove the two covers, which hide the air cleaner and battery.

First Remove Decorative Cover

After you have lifted up the seat, you will see a tab on the back of the decorative cover holding it down. Unlatch this tab. The next step is rather tricky. You will need to carefully lift the decorative cover and move it in order to detach it from the vehicle. You may have to move it up a little, to the side, or side-to-side. Whatever movements you employ to detach this cover from the vehicle, employ them carefully so as not to scratch or damage this cover. After you have removed it, set the decorative cover aside and out of the way.

Remove Second Cover and Sensor

Underneath the decorative cover is another cover, which you will also need to remove. Note there are eight latches which hold down this cover: three latches on each side and one each in the front and back. Use a flathead screwdriver to pop off these latches one by one. Also, as you are popping off the latches, you will notice a sensor near the front of the cover. Use your screwdriver to remove the sensor; after you remove it, put the sensor in a safe place, such as your shirt pocket. The front latch is underneath the front part of the cover, visible from the right-hand side of the V-Rod. You must go underneath the front part of the cover with the screwdriver to access it.

Underneath this second cover, you will see the air cleaner. If you need to replace the air cleaner, you can do so at this time.

Access to the Battery

Having removed these covers, you on your way to having access to the battery. In order to access the battery, remove the carburetor cover. After you have removed the carburetor cover, you can access the battery for removal or servicing.

What they don't mention is you have to remove the velocity stacks to get to the carb cover. Then actually getting your hands on the battery to get it out takes a bit of finaegeling. It also has a big rubber band bungie retainer. Be careful putting the battery back in. You can bind the throttle cables. It take the better part of an hour to swap out the battery. I have long metric T-handle hex wrenches. They are real handy for getting to the velocity stack bolts. Without these, getting the stacks off is probably a real pain.
The "Decorative Cover" is more commonly called the airbox cover. On the 06 and older it's aluminum. Thin aluminum. I think in 07 they went to steel.

If you actually DO need to remove the seat, to change it for another style or install air ride or just get it out of the way, the cable has a t-bar on the end. just point one end of the bar back through the hole. The hinge just has a slotted pastic retainer. Just roll it over until the slot is facing up and push it off with a big flat tip, or just about anything else. One of mine is cracked and I can't find the other one. With the seat down it's not like it really does anything. Enjoy.
