Hi just wondering if a pre 2000 softail rear will interchange with 04 with out to much hassle??

Patience is a virtue. Unfortunately you didn't ask in the best place, which would be the Softail section - far more members spend time in there.

Will they fit? Depends on what you regard as hassle. Early wheels use tapered roller bearings, later ones use sealed ball races. Unfortunately the sealed races are larger in diameter and the central hole in the rotors and pulley are hence larger, so your current ones won't fit the later wheels.
