Default rear tire width on 06 street glide

got a 4.5" wide x 17" HD roadwinder wheel for my 06' street glide and was wondering what size tire I can use on that width rim on my bike.. It came to me with a 170 tire on it ( i cant use that wide of a tire I know ) so I am removing that tire and didnt know if a 150 series tire would work on that wide of a rim ...I have heard of guys squeezing a 160 tire on a 3" rim in there but i'm not sure what installing a tire on a wider rim does to the profile of the tire as far as width ... so I was thinking a 150 maybe ??? dont want to sacrifice safety if that tire is to skinny for a 4.5' wide rim ... if so what 150-17 tire would be best for a street glide riding 2 up alot of the time with the wife ...? Thanks

I am waiting for a 4.5"x17" Deuce wheel to fit on my Glide. Hasn't arrived yet! I plan on using an Avon Storm 160/70 tyre, which is the standard Deuce size, but the Avon has a higher than stock load rating of 79, which is why I have chosen that size of wheel.

The problem with what you would like to do is that tyres with a suitable load rating are either designed narrow and tall, for our stock 3" rims, or wide and low for much wider rims! Most 150 tyres I know of are intended to be used on 3.5" rims, not 4.5".

Before you remove that tyre from the rim, try fitting the wheel and see what it hits! Might be an idea to take off the belt guard first, that way you can see if there is any clearance at all. The things to look for are fender clearance, in other words, will it go inside it. Does it hit the belt (I would expect it will), and what else does it hit?

Report on what you find and we can take things from there.

well I would try a 160 if I knew it would it the bike (and better fit on rim) but I cant afford to buy it then it not fit ) then have to turn around and buy a 150 ... so thats why I wondered if the 150 would work on a 4.5"rim and if so I would probably go ahead and get it from the start ...

I have replied to your other thread with the options that Avon offer to fit that rim size. Frankly the 150 has a low load rating, compared with your current rear tyre. I can't speak for other brands, but the 160/70 Avon makes is reinforced and has a better load rating than your current tyre.

By coincidence, the 08 rear fender I have bought for my bike arrived today. Internally it is just wide enough to take a 160 tyre! My wheel has yet to leave the USA, so it will be a while before I can size things up.

It doesn't look as if what we want to do is common enough for advice to be easily found. So we just have to grab the opportunity and go and do it!

Question

I am looking for an answer myself. If the 170/60/17 tire is on the 07-08 CVO Road Kings it should fit. As far I can tell the fender looks the same, and also the swing arm as a regular FLT. I have posted the following on the touring and the CVO forums.

I have an opportunity to buy a set of CVO/Screaming Eagle wheels off a 07 SE Road King. I have a 00 Road Glide. The front wheel is no problem. What I need to know will the back wheel fit? The wheel is a 17"x4.5" with a 170 tire. I know the bearings are a different dia.I'm going to be changing my swing arm to a 04 to use the 1" axle. I have a pulley spacer. Did the O7 touring CVO's have different swing arms or wider fenders? Any input would be appreciated

I've done some research and I've purchased a '07 CVO Road King fender. Which is an inch wider.I already have newer '04 swing arm, offset axle spacers, modified brake caliper, and a pulley spacer. The guy I bought the swing arm from was running a 160 on a lowered FLT with a stock fender, and a 1 1/2" belt no rubbing at all. I may change out to 1 1/8" belt. Now I have to find some strut covers, grab bar and a few misc. parts which are unique to the SE Road King. Who knows maybe i can run a 180. This is going to be one of my winter projects.

I've given up on the seller of the first Deuce wheel, so have bought another one, which is definitely on its way to me now. So it will be a little while before I can size up the challenge of fitting it.

Heldane, you've done well finding a CVO fender! As for your rear wheel that should have 1" bearings and match up to your 04 swingarm. I have an 04 wheel in an 07 swingarm on my 1990 Glide, as well as the narrow 1 1/8" belt and everything fits togethwer fine. That's why I feel it is worth going a step further to try a Deuce wheel!

I am not certain that your CVO rear wheel will fit, although I will be very surprised if it won't. While your wheel will be different to look at, but it is the same size as a Deuce wheel. Harley didn't change things back there until 09.

interested to hear if you have made progress on this mod. I have acquired the 07 CVO wheel 17 x 4.5 and the 07 CVO Road King rear fender, new it primer from HD, did you change the swing arm? the CVO swing arm is wider by almost an inch and what pulley and belt size did you go with. I am attempting this mod on an 04, so i am thinking i may need the thinner 1 1/8 belt and pulley or maybe even the 1 inch model. Other than those items did you make any other changes?

Cool

I've been reporting progress on another thread here. My Deuce wheel is in the bike, but not rideable yet. I have an 07 swingarm and 1 1/18" belt.
