I want to put the widest tire on my rear 2008 FLHR Road King. What are your REAL LIFE experiences?

The link below is very helpful in explaining widest wheel and tire will fit without modification. I installed a 180mm tire on a 17"x6" rim on my 2002 RG with an unmodified stock swingarm. Did it myself, no kit. It was a pain, but it can be done. There's alot of kits you can buy that includes everything you need to put a 180mm on your bike.

There are two answers to your question! 1. Using the stock parts you have, the widest tyre that will fit your current wheel and also clear the belt and fit inside your fender is a 150/80. They are available with the same load rating, assuming you currently have an MU85. 2. That tyre gets very close to your fender and to go significantly wider, such a 180, will require a wider fender and wheel rim plus changes to maintain tyre/belt clearance, easiest done using a kit, as Toofat indicates.

Hey Toofat I'm interested in doing that 180 conversion on my 04 R/G !! Did you have to widen the rear frame horns ? I'm kind of a DIY guy too. Any help would be appreciated. Also would an 18"x6" rear rim make it easier ??( for brake clearance )

150 is the widest you can get on the rear of a 2008 bagger.
