Harley Davidson Dyna Glide: Fuse Box Diagram

A modern Harley Dyna is a lot more complex than an old knucklehead, but it isn't indecipherable. If you have this handy fuse box diagram, you should be able to tell which one controls what and check if they are blown.

This article applies to the Harley Davidson Dyna Glide (2000-2015).

All of the electrical components on you motorcycle are routed together through the fuse box, which contains the fuses as well as relay. The fuse box acts as a central hub, where each circuit has a corresponding fuse that can protect the electrical components from overloading and becoming damaged. If you have some electrical problem, it is very common to find a blown fuse prior to any major electrical failure. Although a fuse will sometimes blow because of vibration or just age, it will generally point to a additional problem in the system that will need to be attended to.

A fuse box diagram can be separated into three parts, which are the fuse labels, amperage rating, and maxi fuse. Once you become familiar with all these aspects, you will be able to easily find the fuses and troubleshoot problematic electrical components.

Component Breakdown

Fuse Labels

This fuse box diagram has several numbered boxes, with labels written below. Each of these numbers refer to a slot on the actual unit, and the label tells you which electrical component/system it goes to. There is typically a copy of this diagram on the cover over the fuse box on the bike, as well.

Fuse Amperage

If you look closely at a fuse, you'll see a number written on each of them. This number, which is usually white, displays the maximum number of amps the fuse can safely handle. Fuses must be replaced with corresponding amp fuse or there is a chance the affiliated electrical component will become damaged.

The Maxi Fuse

The maxi fuse, or main fuse, is a special part on the bike that sends power to all of the electrical components. It is often disconnected while electrical components are being replaced to avoid any accidental shock. The maxi fuse is the largest of all of them and is also labeled as the "Main Fuse" on the diagram. Disconnecting it is easier than disconnecting the battery terminals and does pretty much the same thing.

Common Questions

Why do fuses blow?

There are number of factors that can cause a fuse to blow, but the most common reason is due to a short in the electrical system. These shorts can lead to a greater issue, or can just be a momentary problem.

Why can't large fuses be used instead?

The fuse amp rating refers to the maximum amperage the electrical component can take. Fuses that are too large will allow more electricity to flow through, increasing the overall risk of damaging an electrical component or even causing a fire.

Common Issues

Blown Fuse

Whenever there is an electrical issue, check the health of its corresponding fuse. Fuses are made to act as a first defense if there is too much electricity going through the system at one time. Sometimes the actual component has not failed, but just the fuse itself.

Open or Short Circuit

These problems relate more to the actual wire harness. An open circuit means there is a break somewhere causing the current to stop flowing, and a short means the wire is going directly to ground, or to another component it shouldn't be. Both are a problem, but only an open circuit just means something isn't working, while a short can actually cause greater damage.
