If you value the brains in your head, or the look of your face, you have to wear a helmet when you ride. But just because you have a big plastic ball on your head doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish, or stand out from the crowd. Here’s a brief sampling of some of the most unique helmets currently on the market.

1. Bell Rogue

Have you ever been watching civil unrest on the news and been envious of the police in their riot gear? Did you think Bane in the Batman movie had a lot of style? Then the Rogue half helmet, with face mask, is perfect for you. Made by long time helmet maker Bell, this head protector is aimed right at the heart of the cruiser market, and probably offers more protection than most ½ helmets, and certainly more than any beanie.

2. Predator Helmet

Were you routing against Arnold Schwarzenegger and the humans in the move "Predator" and against the alien in "Alien vs. Predator"? If so, this helmet is for you! Ideal for freeway riding, as this is a full-face design with lots of wind and impact protection. The small size of the eye holes and the way the dreadlocks move around may make this less than ideal for riding in stop and go traffic though. Each one is custom made in Russia to your specification by a company called NLO-Moto. There are other Predator-style helmets on Amazon, eBay, and various other shops, but this is the original.

3. Nexx Denim Helmet

If you are the type of biker who rides out in a "Canadian Tuxedo," finally someone has made a helmet to match you jeans and jacket. The Nexx 3/4 helmet, with real denim covering (not just paint) is a quality piece of European EEC approved kit, made in Portugal. The Pockets may even be functional. 4. Batman Helmet

You may not be able to (or want to) ride that crazy motorcycle Batman had, or even the Yamaha based one from the 1960s TV show, but you can at least look like him. You probably wear a lot of black leather anyway, so why not finish off the Dark Knight look with a black full face helmet with proper bat-like ears sticking out? The bad guys are going to see you coming and take off scared in the other direction. 5. Halo Helmet

Do you play video games when you aren't out riding your Harley? Who doesn't like blowing away alien bad guys in Halo, or the other titles in the series? Now you can have full-face helmet coverage, and the look of Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. Unlike some of the helmets on this list, this one is both an officially licensed replica and made by a reputable company specifically to be a DOT legal helmet for NECA, the toy and collectible company.

6. Shark Raw Pilots Helmet

These helmets remind me of the ones worn by pilots in the early days of jet aircraft, like during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Shark, a French helmet maker, makes these DOT and EEC approved 3/4 helmets with removable, replaceable goggles and face shields in a number of colors. You can opt for the Russian themed Soyouz style, or get a plain white one and have your own call sign lettered on it. Nothing is stopping you from being Goose, Iceman, or even Maverick. 7. 1STorm Skull 3/4 Helmet

This 3/4 helmet, with added face shield, will make you look something like a giant version of Skeletor from He-man and the Masters of the Universe. These claim DOT approval, and they certainly are better than most beanies, but at less than $50 from Amazon, eBay, and all over the internet, from a brand that doesn't even bother to have a website I would consider them little more than a novelty helmet. The DOT sticker is on the back to satisfy the law though.

8. IV2 3D Skull Helmet

Maybe a little better than the earlier skull helmet, this one from IV2 at least comes from a company that has a website. It is also DOT approved, with a permanently attached nose and upper jaw to a traditionally sized and shaped half helmet. It comes in gloss and matte black, and matte white. You can order them directly from the company website for less than $100, or from Amazon, eBay or many other online retailers.

9. LS2 Bobber Cold Beer Helmet

Not that I would ever condone drinking and riding, but if the thing foremost on your mind at the end of a long hot ride is a cold beer, then why not wear this helmet? LS2 Helmets sells this 3/4 style helmet, with a low profile design and real leather trim for less than $100 at many retailers. You can pair it with some beer goggles as well from Beer Optics, in various styles.

10. Masei Atomic Man Helmet

There have been some recent Marvel Comics official tie in helmets released, made by HJC, but they are nothing like the helmets that the characters actually wear. Masei, however, makes a robot head shaped helmet, very much like what Tony Stark wears, under the name Atomic Man. It is available in a variety of colors, including gold/red, and metallic gold/red, as well as solid silver or gold, and many many more. They are DOT approved full face helmets
