Great pictures of the bikes! Time for an update to the thread. Here are the results so far: What year Evo is considered a "classic"? 1984-1989 8 1990-1994 5 1995-1999 6 All Evolutions 7 Total votes 26 I will have to agree with the poll results so far, I am lead to believe it will be the very early models or all of them (all of them is coming too soon for my tastes, thank god for the aftermarket). Keep the votes coming.

ORIGINAL: Wilinfla I would say any EVO, at least according to my local dealer. I have a 99 FLSTC and I love it, I have 87K on it and it's running strong. I am thinking about an ElectraGlide Standard, but I want a 1998 or older because I like the EVO motor. I am keeping my Heritage though and was just browsing. The dealer said they don't take those "old" models in on trade in because "they are to hard to work on", I couldn't believe he would make a comment like that. I suppose that is why they never touch my bike. I either do it myself or take it to an independent shop if I can't do it. Wow, that sounds like a HUGE mistake for that dealership ... used bikes are usually where all the money is to be made (besides parts and service), just like car dealers The Lakeville location of Twin City Harley in Minnesota has a cream colored '86 Ultra Classic ElectraGlide with all the trimmings and a crapload of extra lights and doo-dads on it that appears to be in really good shape ... the sales person I talked to said that they put about $1500 into it after they took it in on trade, and that it ran and rode like new - they even put a 6 month warranty on it, so I know it must be in good condition ... it's been there for a while now (they're asking $8999 for it) but I'm sure someone will pick it up and end up with a really nice ride that will still have years of life left in it I've asked them about various servicing on my 1990 FLHS and they said that they are more than happy to do any service on it ... hard to believe a dealership would put such heavy restrictions on themselves ... it's really not productive

I'm probably as biased as anyone here as to "their" year being a classic.. So put me in for my '90 FLHS as my favorite. I love the way she handles and looks... I've yet to find many "new" bikes that can stand up to her on the comments department.

I bought my '85 FXSB from the original owner, who bought it new in Germany while he was stationed there as a 'copter wrench. The original engine ate a cam bearing (the inside of the cases looked like someone had blasted it with a shotgun). I ordered a OEM rebuild, so the new engine has the right numbers on it. It's got over 80,000 miles on it now.

If I understand your question, it is "what is a 'classic' Evo?" I'm going with 84-9. I consider the "Classic" Evo to be the one with the separate oil tank, not the one that bolts on behind the motor. I don't know what year that would be, but 1986 is certainly one of them. If your question was "are Evo's classic?" Then I would have to say that all of them would be classics after the twincam came out.

1984-1989 of course! but I have to agree that sooner than later all EVO's will be the new shovel's...Also, dealers that refuse to work on older EVO's shouldn't have the right to hang the Bar and Shield! Ok, enough of that! Later...

Since 1936, OHV Harleys have retained the same basic design up to Evo. Mine is composite of S&S, HD and Crane. The greatest improvements in the Evo in my mind are the all aluminum construction and the ease of disassembly with the stud/head nut design. The rocker setup is also an improvement. I see no advantage to the compexity of the twincam at all. All Evos are classics IMO!

With all the complaints I have been hearing about the twin cams and heat you can be sure there will soon be some type of cooling systen. I see the cop bikes are noe sporting fans to keep them cool while ideling. I also think thay the shift is to be less repairable by the consumer. They want you by the balls. At $95 an hour I still need to do as much as I can at home. Hell, they can give the bikes away, in three years of shop maintanance and repairs you could have doubled the cost of the bike! It is worst than owning an audi or bently.

My vote is for my year model 1995. MS WHOYAH! is number 59 of 2000 fuel injected Ultra Anniversary models. Just lookin' at 'er in the garage after a long day's ride pleases me.

OH man, notlost that enclosed chain is great,my 84 fxrt had one.Had to adjust it once in 45,000 miles just changed the oil in it, same time as the motor.Even with the enclosed chain, if it broke-master link an gone.Bought a 86 fxrt then discovered it had a belt,48,000 miles later it broke, tow 100 miles to shop put on an emergency belt, that lasted 250 it broke, 600$ later 2 wks and goin again.Put a new chain on and the enclosier, and dont worry about gravel, mud, dirt or anything.Use a thin bead of silicone where it bolts to the tranny an it wont even mark its spot.

I like to think my 1992 FXDBD is one. HD only made it for one year and it's a limited run (1700 were made). As far as dealers not working on older Evos, that's fine. F@#@ them anyway. If all you do is hook up the bike to a pc to read error codes, you ain't a "mechanic", you're a "tech" and there's a difference. A mechanic can tune a carb, a tech looks for a fuel injector to remap. Evos were some of the best motors the factory ever built. If they weren't, all the custom builders wouldn't still be using them. Thumbnail Image
