I saw a post where some guy was having trouble getting melted tennis shoe off his pipes.  He let a buddy talk him into using oven cleaner on the pipes.  Needless to say it went on other parts and now he’s got problems.  I thought that I would share a trick that I thought up and use from time to time.  Maybe it’s not new, but I’ve never heard anyone else recommend it.  I warm the bike up and then I wad aluminum foil about the size of a golf ball and scrape the gunk off.  The aluminum is harder than the melted plastic and softer than the chrome.  It works like a charm for me.  Try it in a hidden area first to be sure.  Hope this is useful info.  BB

You'r right Bob. I've used Easy Off oven cleaner with amazing results, however I would recomend removeing the exhaust section first. If you would spray the Oven Cleaner on painted parts or even worse on a aluminum case I would hate deal with the results.

I've got some goo on mine that I'm going to try both these suggestions on and post results.  I have ended up with some parts of polyester blend Dockers and uniform pants left on my muffler and engine guard.    To avoid the overspray with the oven cleaner option I am going to spray it into some other receptacle and then spot apply or brush it on the areas needing cleaning.   Will post success or failure results soon…..

Before you get too drastic, try this on warm pipes.  Dampen the spot with Brasso, let sit for 10 seconds and rub if off.  I found about half of the nasty came off without any effort.  A second application polished it like new.

You can use a copper coin in the same way, no need to heat up the pipes.

I read somewhere that WD 40 works pretty well. I have tired 3 or 4 times - the stuff works to get that crap off. Amazing. I like the aluminum foils idea for the harder stuff.

Believe it or not...

use the copper coin to scratch chrome, guess it must be softer so causes absolutely no damage!

Anyother would no doubt scratch but copper on the road tar or other hard to remove sticky stuff works great.

Try it

Sorry, I'm not from your parts so a guess the penny type 'brown' coin as opposed to the silver shiny ones!

Probably not even copper, but the 'brown' coin, use it to scrape at stuff on your pipes not a problem..

Amazing!

I have had the unfortunate experience of having a white plastic bag melt onto my black exhaust.........think I was pissed.
Just one BIG bit of advice, be VERY CAREFUL if you are going to use Easy Off on your exhaust. I used it as instructed by a bunch of friends and although it did help to get some off of it, it didn't all come off. The CAREFUL part is making sure you do not get any overspray onto any of the black wrinkle paint! Even after rinsing it right away, after riding the bike for a few hours afterwards, the black coating started to flake and peel! In my case it didn't matter a whole hell of a lot. I was ripping the motor apart for the rebuild and I had blasted and repainted the engine cases, and I also chose to wrap the exhaust! Just be careful.
If your pipes are chrome, then you may want to consider a super, super fine piece of steel wool to give a try.

I had a spot of melted heel on my pipe and it came right off with no damage using zippo lighter fluid on a cloth with warm pipes.
Works Great

I have always been curious about all the "how to get this or that melted chit off pipes".  I have had the full gammut of things melt on my pipes and have never had a problem getting any of it off.  With hot pipes.  And I mean hot.  Like just stopped from a two hour ride hot.  Take any towel drenched in water.  Totally drenched.  Don't ring out any water and start wiping the area.  The water boils and steams under the rag and everything I have ever wanted to get off my pipes came off with very little effort.  The water also keeps the rag from catching fire and cool to the touch.  You need to be carful through caus you can burn yourself though.

Had a pair of pants (sort of like basketball warmup pants) melt on my heat sheild.  I tried just about every cleaner imaginable and nothing would touch it.  Tried both cold and hot pipes.  The good old 1 cent piece was the only thing that worked!!!  Does not scratch.

How long has most of the stuff been on your pipes? I have some shoe sole that has been on the passenger part of the pipes for awhile.

My dealers detailer showed me a trick with 0000 steal wool and brake cleaner - then use mothers polish to bring back the shine.  It works and it is quick.

Like this guy said... use fine steel wool and add some spray wax directly onto the steel wool.  Then just rub the spot that has something stuck to it.  I had melted a microfiber rag to my pipes and some tech at a dealer showed me this and it worked like magic.  I wish I knew this prior to messing up one spot on my heat shield by scraping the micro rag off with (well you don't want to know what I did)....

Anyway, use the steel wool and spray wax and you can clean off anything from the pipes.

You are welcome!

I had some melted tennis shoe rubber on my pipes, I got it off with Mothers chrome polish, and a GENEROUS AMOUNT of elbow grease and a fingernail, I got the elbow grease on sale at Wal mart.  Later, I figured it went on hot, it must come off hot, I'll try wiping it off of hot pipes next time with a cotton towell.  OVEN CLEANER, SHEEEEIIIITTTT, that stuff would never go near my bike unless I had a built in grill on the sissy bar.

I found that the mothers chrome polish actually kind of blemished my chrome on the VH pipes of my last bike.  I'll stick to the steal wool and spray on wax.. it works great regardless of if the pipes are hot or cold.

I've been told to stay away from polishes with ammonia, I've used it 3 times so far, so, if it damages the chrome, I'll stay away from it.  Doesn't the steel wool scratch the chrome, even 0000 wool is abrasive.  How is it used with the wax?? Thanks

Steel wool will not scratch the chromme as long as it it is 0000 or greater. I use it to get the bugs off the engines, and to get anything off my chrome. Works like a champ.
