Default 80 Sporty with Blown Case

I have an 80 Sporty 1000cc 4-speed that I just rebuilt this past summer. I was riding it and got next to a 600 ricer and wasn't gonna let him fly by, so...I climb into it a little bit and I'm smoking the ricer, then I shift from 2nd to 3rd and I've got nothing. There was no power getting to the ground. At first I thought the chain fell off, boy was I wrong. I pull to the side of the road and look around. There is a chunk of gear hanging out of the tranny case. I blew a hole in the case and lost against the ricer.

So...Long story, but the tranny is shot, the case is blown, and I don't know what to do. I don't know what tranny to go with, I don't know what to do about the case, and I don't have a ton of money to pour back in this ol' bike. If someone could direct me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jug

To paraphrase; "You are well and truly screwed."

No matter what you do, it ain't gonna be cheap. First off, where is the tranny blown? Lower right rear corner is one place they usually grenade. In the past several outfits made pieces to repair this. And have you pulled the primary and looked behind the clutch? Generally a tranny that blows chunks tends to grenade the trapdoor, too. Again, several outfits use to make heavy duty trapdoors.

Do a search for Trock. They were Sporty specialists, and may have what you need in the way of parts, and services. Stroicek is another name who made good Sporty stuff.

If the cases can be repaired, it has to be done right. Things have to be in perfect alignment when the cases are welded, and after they are welded. Line boring where needed is a necessity. If things aren't straight, best case is it won't stay in gear. Worst case is it blows up on the first shift. Don't trust this to cousin Joe, no matter how good he can weld aluminum.

I do beleive that the case portion is still being sold to repair the case. BUt he is right and the saying is funny truly screwed. You other option is to bit the bullet and buy a set of new case's and build one bad sporty, I did a 88inch kit here not too long ago... WOW!!!! did that thing scream.

Sorry, I can't help you with the repairs, but that had to really suck. I can just imagine the crotch rocket boys sittin' around the Sonic talking about the blown up Harley. Wonder if you can find a rebuilt engine and transmission you can just drop in?
