I've got this wierd problem with '03 e-glide classic w/25,000mi. Running Amsoil. Every now and then, after the engine has warmed up while cruising, the oil light will flicker for a bit, then just "come on". It may or may not go out after awhile. Oil level and pressure is good. Of course it didnt happen when dealer checked it out. What does the oil light indicate? Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot appreciated.

You have one of 2 things going on. The first posability is a bad oil pressure sensor. Have the Harley Dealer put a mechanical gage on the motor and check the oil pressure. The second posability, if the sensor is good, is the the phonelic followers on the cam chain tensioners are starting to come a part and the pieces are going through your oil pump trashing the gears. The cure is a new oil pump and gear driven cams. I am not a Harley Mechanic but my best friend is a Master Harley Tec with 35 years working for Harley. If you email me I will give you his phone number or you can email him at rockelracing@yahoo.com

Remove the connectors on the sending unit and see if there is any corrosion in the connector. Dip a toothbrush into clean denatured alcohol and clean in the connector and the pins on the sensor. If it still does it I would replace the sensor.

Are you sure the oil pressure is good and steady? If so, the best bet is that the wire to the sensor is pinched or has a bare spot. disconnect the sensor and see if the light still comes on to prove this. If the wire is good, then the sensor is the problem.

I'm haveing the same problem on my 2000 FLHT. My questions are, if all is right, what pressure would the light come on, and if it were a wire chaffing or loose ground would my gauge also not work? In the service manual it mentions making sure you have oil returning to the pan but it's not real clear ( to me at least) how to do this. Thanks, Wally

Turned out to be a wire grounding out. About 6-8 inchs after the sensor , right near a wire clamp. Fixed and problem is gone. Hope its as easy for you Wally

if the sending unit is disconnected, the oil light would operate still?

The "sending unit" is also called the Oil Pressure switch and is the protruding black cylinder to the left of the Oil Filter as viewed from the front. It has a wired plug on its tip. It operates both the oil pressure light and the oil pressure gauge (electric) in OP gauge equipped models. The switch does two things, when you turn the ignition on but don't start, it is open and the light comes on but the OP gauge doesn't operate. When you crank it and OP comes up, it closes which turns out the light and gives the gauge a complete circuit to register OP. IF both light comes on while running and the gauge doesn't operate, you can be pretty sure it is the switch. These are frequent failures, relatively and the switch seems to be a poorly made part. Further, the light and gauge, when operating properly, are redundant. Both dependent on electrics, not mechanical input like an oil filled gauge. Other things that can give a light are weak oil pump, clogged oil filter, diluted oil, particles in the oil lines, etc. IF you have no or very low oil pressure running , hot, you WILL hear the top end self destructing. EZ

Greetings, Have 2003 1200xlh with same symptoms. Tracked to wiring harness under headlight shroud and dual instrument cluster. Specifically, wires 8&9 for oil and neutral. Seems design of metal shroud caused chafing on wires which had bare spots- more recognizable when rain or wet. Corrected - problem went away. Took a while to diagnose as lights would flicker when turning one direction while riding, not other. I shut down, left ignition on, rotated handle bars without bike running, could reproduce so knew it wasn't oil pressure related. Those wiring harneses are stuffed into small space. Try similar. You may get lucky. Dave

One thing caught my eye from your statement, "Engine self destructing". I just did a 3K road trip, on my 03 RoadKing. 3200rpm range most of the trip. Halfway through I topped off the oil, and may have put in a 1/4 to 1/2 quart too much. The next day the engine oil light comes on, but goes off at higher rpm. Engine has a whine sound that was not there before. I'm guessing its starving for oil, I'm just trying to narrow down the problem. The manuals are very little help in diagnosing. I've replaced all the fluids at the proper level, but still get the whine in the engine. I'm afraid to start her after reading your blog. I'm guessing a bad oil sensor would not stop the oil flow, chances of an oil filter clog is slim, anything else besides the oil pump? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
