Default Widest tire on '79 Sporty

I'm rebuilding a '79 Sporty and would like a wider tire on the rear. The stock tire is a 140. What's the widest I can go on the stock 3.5" wheel? Can I go with a wider wheel? Would I need an offset sprocket? This is my first build and need all the help I can get.

I intend to install fixed struts in place of the rear shocks for now. Not sure I want a hardtail, and figure I can always replace the struts if I don't like it.

Ain't sure how wide you can go, but a 140 ain't stock. Stock 16 inch was a MT90-16 on a 3.00 inch rim. MT90 isequivalent to a 130.

I've got a 16 inch x 3.5 inch rear rim. Just want to know if anyone has put any wider tires on the rear. Looks like a 160 might fit.

Thanks.

when I shortened the shocks on my '76 the stock tire rubbed the bolts that hold on the fender side struts. I would suggest keeping the ride height near stock. 80's sportys had a wider fender flairing on the sides. Wider tire usually means wider fender.
