I started with a '70's era sissy bar and modified it. I made it so it bolts under the seat instead of using side plates. Then I built the luggage rack and welded it onto the sissy bar. It is now ready for paint or powdercoating. I can't afford to chrome it.

Outstanding. Used some good creatitivity there. Have you tested it out with any one on it to see how it distributed the weight?

The craftsmanship is fantastic! However, what do you plan to cover your rear fender with so it isn't scratched up by the sissybar? Also, do you think one seat screw is enough to hold the weight of the passenger and luggage? What is the other hole going to attach to?

I sent it out to be powdercoated black today.
The seat pan is going to have strips of truck topper tape applied so as not to scratch the fender.
I am using the rear seat bolt and I installed an insert nut in a factory hole so that it has two attaching bolts, one at the front & the rear.
DoI do this for a job? Nope. I'm an autobody repairer.
The seat pan is 1/8th inch plate and doesn't budge at all when weight is applied. To mod the seat pan I used a three pound hammer and a 8 inch bench vise. I made a pattern using masking paper, drew it out on the plate, cut it out with the plasma cutter and bent it to shape.
Never built a sissy bar before but I needed one. The stealer wanted 600 Canadian dollars for a detachable one. So I decided to build one.
When I get it back I'll take more pics and post them.

You are right ******. I really enjoyed making this sissybar. I will be keeping the patterns I made so I can make another one someday. I was thinkng of making a second one but it wouldbe a padded one. Then if I was going to do two up riding the passenger would be comfortable.

Nice work, man. Homemade is the purest form of art. A question: how muchdoes a powdercoat job cost?

metal_mike

A buddy is powdercoating it for me. I will have around $45.00 Canadiantotal invested. I thought I'd have it finished by now but the price was right & I am patient. When I get it back I am also going to make a back pad that will be sleeved so I can slide it onto it when my daughter rides with me.
Thanks to all for the comments.

I like the personalizing thing, I can imagine the trail and error on the design, I made something similar for my Intruder useing a 1970s rack looks good. I got a 3 part pint called por15 I used on my home made trailer hitch for the RG ,hard stuff like powder coat. http://www.rustymetalpaint.com/
