Default 07 tranny noises again. ..

I've heard several people complain about different noises.
could we maybe get a thread here of what the noises are,
when they start and when they quit, how many miles are on the bike.

what have you tried mechanically (remap, fluids etc)

I asked a while back if anybody had tried a slight up or down pressure on the shifter
to see if noise went away or was less noticeable.

I got an answer to one question from MIKE at the latus HD forum
Seems a helical gear is still engaged while in 5th gear, even though 5th is supposedly a straight cut:

"5th gear does drive through one set of helicals, in addtion to the 5th gear set and main shaft but 6th is direct drive involving only the main drive gear and mainshaft. "

So one of my original thoughts on this noise may still be valid (but I'm not an engineer).
And HD is still insisting it's normal.

[sm=deadhorse.gif] This has been beat to death, try a search and you can find a dozen threads like you want. Here it is in a nutshell: 1st and 5th are straight cut gears, made this way and placed there by harley to handle the more powerfull 96" motor. Straight cut gears make more noise than the other helical cut gears used for 2nd,3rd,4th and 6th. This is not a defect, and not a single noise related falure has ever been heard of, here or on any other harley forum I or others subscribe to. If the slight whine in 5th bothers you or others, it has been found the change to mobil1 75/90 syn gear oil or amsoil 75/90 severe gear oil will help.

RIDE IT. GET USED TO THE SOUNDS OF YOUR HARLEY DAVIDSON, otherwise, buy as Goldwing.

He doesn't EVEN own an '07. He is nothing more than a troll trying to stir some pot that doesn't exist. Hell, next thing he will claim that the '07 tranny caused him to wreck.

Once again that's not my point on this subject.
what I was hoping for is an indepth thread of who rides the affected models.
How many miles are on it when problem became most apparent.
when is it most noticeable; under power, cruising, coasting, what speed.
Clutch pulled in or not etc.
What have you tried to correct the problem we all have heard different fluids.

What have different dealers actually said.
As I posted above about the gearing, but I got something further I just heard
this may be hard to follow but.
When you are in 5th gear the gears are straight cut, but a set of helicals are still spinning and meshed together (just not locked with sliding dogs) and 6th is also meshed together
and spinning, again not locked with the dogs.
That means a lot of metal is moving and meshing together thus more opportunity for more noise to be generated. In the past gears were moved in and out of mesh. Now they basically stay meshed all the time, but one or the other spins freely on shaft until the dogs ar slid into contact to engage the gear and make the shift change.
one helical cut that is basically floating and quieter by design, but places lateral shift on the gear assembly.
And two that are straight cut which by design are naturally a little noiser.
Now unless there is too tight a mesh or too much lateral shifting causing parts to bind slightly, causing a problem (we will find out in time I guess) then the noise is just that.
noise caused by a considerable amount of moving gears. May be no cure from HD at all.

Lateral shift pushing against other moving parts can generate noise
Over all heat from all parts warmed up could cause reduction in tolerances and cause noise
not seen on the drawing board, in computer simulations or on the test track.
But can show up in the real world.
I am just trying to gather as much information as I can to see.
Kind of what this forum is about exchanging ideas and information and just having fun.
Having fun, sharing knowledge and concerns etc.
and besides I like to gather knowledge that may pay off someday.
But I presume for a lot of people ignorance is bliss.
But it never ceases to amaze me how many of you always manage to engage mouth without first engaging the brain.

going to break a rule of mine
I'm not a troll you loud mouth
I'm interested in as much info as I can get on what makes them tick, hum, clunk whatever
right or wrong and NOT just trannies.
So in future if you don't like my posts or the info I offer, when you see my name on the post just go on by and live in the ignorance of things you seem to enjoy.
