I'm seeing more and more V-Rods on the road, and its the younger riders. I wouldn't mind riding one myself, and if they came out with a liquid cooled softail or touring bike I'd trade right away. The power output of the V-Rod is very impressive, and I think liquid cooling is indeed the way of the future.

All I can say is my VRSCA is made in America, says Harley Davidson on the side and the last time I left my Harley dealership, I took me 15 minutes to get out of there due to all the people standing around it with smiles on their faces. Its a 2004, and it's Impact blue, with custom exhuast and crome. People at the gas station stop and look or stop me and say thats a great bike. Funny thing is, I dont see that happening with foreign bike too much.

ORIGINAL: gunrunner I like the looks of the night rod special, but it confirms the fact harley is influenced by the metric companies. It is styled in looks right after the very popular yamaha midnight warrior even down to the paint rings on the wheels. Harley used the DX blacked out with orange look in the 80 's with the sturgis model low riders. they used it again with the early 90's dnya sturgis . I think Yamaha did the cloning .

It's probably the only thing that will get us off the D. It better have some wicked handling for a tourer. Kind of like what the VRSCs have compared to other cruisers.

ORIGINAL: MC 88 With this type of attitude its a wonder that Ford ever made anything but the Model T..... That's one hellova point. You wil always have "Traditionalist" that insist that we all ride panheads at the worst but to be a "REAL" Harley rider you need to still be on a kicker with no oil filter because the oil drains on the ground. Guess the Softail, Dyna, Touring, and Sportster lines are all crap too. Good Point 1peter, I see the errs of my way. Well I can see this thread got the blood moving in allot of people ... Let me chim in as well ... First let me say I'm old school and have been riding Harley's since 1976. I've owned iron head sporties, shovels, evo's and the newest member to the "Harley" family, the V-Rod. Back in the AMF (adios mutha f**cker) days, Harley owners were bashed by the "Jap" riders. Our reply to the "rice" heads was, "I'd rather push my Harley than ride a jap bike". Now we have former jap bike riders who finally had enough money to buy a Harley saying the V-Rod isn't one. I find the whole thing quite funny. In 1984 while attending Motorcycle Mechanic's Institute, the prototype to the now revolution motor was sitting on the counter as you walked into class. Harley was looking into a liquid cooled motor long before they introduced it in 2000. The V-Rod was, is and always will be a Harley. To the original egghead who started this thread, obviously you gimp around the forums to stir up the local's and sit back and grin. When the first evo motor came out, the traditionalist (panhead/shovelhead) riders called it a "Jap" engine and would never own one, that is wasn't a real Harley... They kept saying that right up until they bought one ... The Revolution motor is here to stay and sooner or later, it will become the "motor" in Harley's... The evolution motor is the longest running motor the company has ever produced... Everything and anything you can do the motor has been done and it's life will go along with the flathead, knucklehead, panhead, shovel etc... Like it or not, it is what it is... In order for HD to stay competitive with the foreign bikes, they had to design and produce a liquid cooled motor... Bottom line, the Revolution motor is the "best" motor the company has produced to date... Presently I own a 05 VRSCB, 06 883 XL, 06 Dyna Wide Glide and a 07 FLHTC... I love each for what it is and what it was intended for... In the not to distant future, I will be purchasing the turbo kit from Trask for the V-Rod and next year I'll probably purchase the turbo for the Classic... Those who don't like the V-Rod have a right to their opinion... But sooner or later, as with all of the previous models that Harley has produced, the "Old Timers" will either fade away or buy ... I'm 55 and I still feel the need for speed from time to time and my V-Rod fills the need quite well... Thumbnail Image

Good honest post Tbones, seems like the Revolution motor is here for a while, I have the NightRodSpecial and covered nearly 4000miles since late May 06 but am smitten after driving and reading articles about the Cross Bones I am buying one, I will be trading in the VRSCDX unfortunately but as have 2 other bikes there is a limit to what I can keep, guys locally here say the 96B engine is not a patch on the evo's but that's not worrying me, enjoy the bikes you have, thats what it is all about

I hope it's ok for me to weigh in on this one.... I own an 883 xl, which any trip to the HD dealer will tell you is the lowest-priced Harley. I could barely afford it, but oh well. They had a Demo Day for the V-Rods a couple of weeks ago, and going in, I wasn't really that crazy about the bikes- but after riding them, I feel Harley has a really great bike who's potential hasn't been realised yet. If I was Master-Builder, or had loads o' $$$ to throw at the project, I would inject a bit more of the Nightster "Stripped down" look to the bike, make mid-pegs the norm and foward pegs/controls the option. Then I would address the exhuast system. I understand they have to fly below the FED's dB radar, but the styling ...! I think a clean, stepped 2 into 1 system that doesn't look like something from "Prince and the Purple Rain" would really do the bike well. I'm not saying to do away with the present line-up of V-Rods, but to offer something like what I described as an alternative. Again, after riding the bikes, I was impressed as heck, and wishing I had the $$$s to buy and build one for myself. I hope they DON'T give up on them, because someday I WILL be able to afford one.

A guy walked over to me and said so what do you think of that water cooled thing on the front . I looked at him and said great idea . So if i told you i have some thing that will lower you bike temp and maybe even make it run longer you woundnt want it . He said if it ment putting that water cooler on it ,no ! . Its funny how some people \\;hate a change . I love the vrod and see a lot of them here in GA . To spite \\;what some of the older hd riders say around here .The bike rides out great for me and thats what really matters in the end . I have offerd them to just ride it they say nope its not a hd . Thats funny read up on it and check out it roots it is a hd and the future to .

I recently traded a 07 FXDC for a 08 VRSCDX so I can completely relate to this subject  \\; I guess like it or not, some Harley riders only consiter big twins to be "real" Harleys. \\; Sportsters and V-RODs are tagged as "girls bikes", "half-harleys" or worse. \\; I really don''t understand some peoples hostility to the V-ROD. \\; For years Harley was missing a performance model in their lineup and now they have it. \\; It just gives the customer another choice. I like dyna''s, sportsters, \\;softtails, baggers and v-rods. \\; They are all great bikes in their own way. \\;To me , bashing someone for their choice of motorcycle is just dumb. The TC96 is a great engine but it revs so slow and lets face it, a 1200 sportster only makes 3hp less then the 1584cc TC96B. \\; Yes you can build a killer big inch TC but it''s expensive and reliability will suffer. \\; From everything i''ve read, it seems that the revolution engine is \\;about as bulletproof as an engine can get\\; even when thrashed hard. \\; Liquid cooling allows for reliable EPA legal big horsepower and how can that be a bad thing. \\; Although the V-ROD isn''t a "superbike" in the same way that the 1958 XLCH was in it''s day, it''s the first Harley in decades to combine high style and high performance (including great brakes!) so successfully. \\; I kind of like the fact that there''s not as many v-rod''s around as other H-D models\\; \\;feels good to be different! \\; Big twins are about as plentyful here as pickup trucks\\; they''re everywhere. \\; \\;My Night Rod Special gets more looks then any bike I''ve ever owned! I guess the bottom line is just ride and don''t worry about \\;the haters. \\; Life''s too short! \\;

Last night at QS&\\;L bike night in Douglasville, GA, we had 3 V-rods parked together and a couple of V-maxs parked close by. It was the RUBs that tried to ignore us. All the long time airheads were fascinated by the speed and power this little group represented. Too bad we couldn''t find a couple of 109s to join us. We heard a lot of "damn fine bikes, but it just ain''t for me" comments. Which was OK. I even turned the tables on a really well done bobber. The owner did all the work himself. Great looking bike. I said "damn fine bike, it just ain''t for me". He almost swallowed his Cope laughing.

ORIGINAL: rencrn8 Any business that refuses to change will be left behind in this every changing world. The VRSC is a move in the right direction for Harley. They can only live on the legacy of the air-cooled V-twin for so long. Sooner or later it is going to be passed for the faster, lighter, cooler running, and higher HP of the future unless they do some drastic changes. I love my Electra-Glide with the 88, and it will always have a place in my garage, but the VRSCDX is the sh1t. I have ridden just about every kind of bike I can think of at least once and the only bike I remember feeling like my DX makes me feel is the Duc 999. If you are questioning the popularity of H2O cooled V-twins just visit some of your local Jap dealers\\; M109R, smaller Boulevard line, VTX''s, Kaw''s. Any objective person cannot deny that this setup is very popular, the biggest reason I think the VRSC lags a little behind the import bikes is lack of knowledge, higher price tag, and the elitist attitude that many HD fans have towards their liquid breathing little brother. Come on guys lets all get along, if you don''t like the VRSC line DON"T RIDE IT. Every time I hear a naysayer doubting the VRSC it makes me laugh a little, it is so obvious that they feel so threatened by it that they insist on beating it down. Seems to me like too many people are worried too much about image and not doing what we really love\\; riding. Once again, it is not what you ride, it is that you ride. I love the traditional Harleys as much as the next guy, but they cannot deliver the smiles per mile that my DX can. Tireater I think you need to do a little research on the V-rod and find out about it roots, and if you truely are a bike guy like you claim you cannot help but to admire the brilliant technology that went into this bike. I don''t post much, usually just lurk, but I am tired of hearing you going around trying to stir sh1t up. Sounds to me like your hobby is being a keyboard commando, maybe you should take up riding a little more. Different strokes for different folk. What a soap opera, move along. BTW check out www.1130cc.com for some good info about the VRSC, but don''t run your mouth you won''t last log over there. Later  \\; Damn tireater, you just got owned..................................

ORIGINAL: DesertSpeed I just want to freakin'' RIDE!!! My wife and I have our reasons for getting our V-rod. It''s bike we searched for for a LOOOOONG time. What most nay-sayers forget is is where the V-rod engine came from. Hint: V-twin Racing Street Custom. I guess only us hard-core race fans remember the VR1000. As for the V-rod bagger, rumors out of KC say it will be a 1450 in essentially an EG frame. Bet it won''t belong before one of those monster Revos gets a big bore kit, spinner muffler and ends up back in a VRSC frame. I''m not surprised onther riders see very few V-rods. We''re blindingly fast!! OK, not really. We just tend to hang with other V-rodders. So far, only about 60,000 V-rods have been built. They are very popular outside the US. Not saying the US gets less than other countries. It''s just a fairly small prodution bike that goes out world wide. I don''t care about all the who''s better crap. On weekdays I ride to work. On weekends my wife and I chase the sun.  \\; +1 \\;  \\; We''re blindingly fast... \\; \\; \\;  \\;

Weird to read this thread. I''m renting a V-rod on Wednesday because I have to get my XL1200 estimated (some jackass hit me a while back). I''ll enjoy the speed, and I rented it because it was either that or another Sportster (and I wanted to try something else). I will comment more after I ride it, but from what I''ve seen, the V-Rod would be better off in the Buell line. The V-rod is definitely cool, but at the end of the day, assuming money was no object and I couldn''t sell either of themI wouldn''t trade my Sportster for a V-Rod.

Its hard for me to like them. I still wont buy a new bike cause the darn things are all fuel injected. I spose I''ll have to change one day. Till then I''ll stick with the dynas.

V-rod report: I am even less impressed than I expected to be. \\;\\\\\\; The bike is gutless from a dead stop, has no torque below 4,000 RPM, and does not sound, look, or feel like a Harley-Davidson to me. I will say that the V-Rod looks sleek, is lightning quick in its two useful gears on the road (first and second, which I haven''''t topped out 2nd gear because it can''''t be done lawfully anywhere in America and I am wondering why there are still three left). \\;\\\\\\; It also has a smoother shifting transmission than my Sportster, and rides a lot nicer. \\;\\\\\\; It also sits nice and low...I''''m 5''''5" and I can acually squat down on it and bend my knees! \\;\\\\\\; I liked that aspect of it. \\;\\\\\\; It also feels like it weighs about 50 lbs, the balance is \\;\\\\\\; much better than any other bike I''''ve ever sat on. What I didn''''t like is that is has nowhere near the grunt that even my Sporty has, I can only imagine what it''''d be like for someone who was used to a big twin or a larger metric cruiser. \\;\\\\\\; The stock handlebars force me to twist my wrist outwards, which is uncomfortable. \\;\\\\\\; The foot pegs are actually decent for me even though I''''m short, but the shifter could stand to be adjusted so that I didn''''t need to pry my boot behind it to shift. I am not a Harley purist, but I can tell why these bikes don''''t sell in America. \\;\\\\\\; For all the "girls bike" comments about the Sportster, at least it looks, feels, and sounds like a Harley. \\;\\\\\\; To me, riding a brand new V-rod is like getting a rental car. \\;\\\\\\; You get in it, everything is new, the car is shiny and stuff, but after a few days, you realize that a brand new car with cranker windows, the smallest 4 cylinder engine, etc., is just not a fun vehicle. \\;\\\\\\; That''''s my impression after riding it. \\;\\\\\\; The only thing it really has going for it is the snappy acceleration between 30 and 90 mph. I really think that they should slap the Buell name on the side, put a set of sport bike style handlebars on it with shifters below and behind the driver''''s butt and try to sell more of them that way. \\;\\\\\\; A V-twin cruiser that sounds like a crotch rocket has no place in the Harley line as far as I''''m concerned. I''''m really disappointed. \\;\\\\\\; I expected something that sounded like a v twin with a longer powerband and a lightning quick launch from a dead stop. \\;\\\\\\; What I got was a bike that buillds speed quickly but yet still feels sluggish and slow and sounds like a ricer. I''''m going to be so glad to take this thing back and get my old, vibrating, choppy Sportster back. \\;\\\\\\; At least it has enough torque that it feels like you''''re going somewhere, even though it''''s nowhere near as fast as the V-rod. Sorry V-rodders, but your bike is just didn''''t do anything for me. \\;\\\\\\; I wanted to give it a chance, because I really don''''t care about the minor details like the water cooled engine or the 60* twin, or even the OHC design. \\;\\\\\\; Too bad I wasn''''t 4 miles down the road before I realized that it acts like scrawny small block in a heavy pickup truck with too big a camshaft. I want my sporty back!

Funny, i rode a 1200 sportster before buying my Street Rod. I much prefered the acceleration, handling and braking abilities of the Rod. Not to mention the much better chassis. I viewed it as a more modern Sportster with better all around performance.

ORIGINAL: downzero What I didn''''''''t like is that is has nowhere near the grunt that even my Sporty has, I can only imagine what it''''''''d be like for someone who was used to a big twin or a larger metric cruiser. See above comment. \\; They have every bit the "grunt" the sporty has. \\; That grunt you are reffering to occures at peak tq. \\; On a sportster that happens at 3k, on the V it happens between 6 and 7. \\; The V has just as much grunt at 85ft ilbs stock, more than a sportster, and only 5ilbs less than a big twin. \\; You need to use your throttle/clutch more to access it off the line. quote:
ORIGINAL: downzero I am not a Harley purist, but I can tell why these bikes don''''''''t sell in America. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; For all the "girls bike" comments about the Sportster, at least it looks, feels, and sounds like a Harley. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; To me, riding a brand new V-rod is like getting a rental car. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; You get in it, everything is new, the car is shiny and stuff, but after a few days, you realize that a brand new car with cranker windows, the smallest 4 cylinder engine, etc., is just not a fun vehicle. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; That''''''''s my impression after riding it. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; The only thing it really has going for it is the snappy acceleration between 30 and 90 mph. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. \\; You are compairing a 125hp monster to an economy rental? \\; And your 50hp sportster to a sportscar? \\; Please. \\; You really need to learn how to ride this thing. \\; The fact you think it''s snappy only above 30 means you don''t know how to ride it. \\; This things do 0-60 in under 3.3 seconds, and 60" in under 1.4. quote:
ORIGINAL: downzero I really think that they should slap the Buell name on the side, put a set of sport bike style handlebars on it with shifters below and behind the driver''''''''s butt and try to sell more of them that way. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; A V-twin cruiser that sounds like a crotch rocket has no place in the Harley line as far as I''''''''m concerned. I don''t know where you have been the last ten years, but they all sound like crap with stock pipes. \\; Mine sounds like a Harley. \\; At the d | | |
