Default Rinehart 2-1 with Mikuni 42

Does anyone have a Rinehart 2-1 on their engine with a Mikuni 42 feeding it?

I'm in the process of jetting my carb and it seems that I'm having to go too rich.

I replaced the intake to head seals when I installed these and checked a couple nights ago for intake leaks. I didn't find any.

Don't know if this will help but I have a 93 Fatboy with a Mikuni 42 and a Thunderheader. I'm running a 25 pilot jet, the #97 on the middle clipposition and a 167.5 main jet. It's still a little fat at part throttle. I'm going to raise the clip one position and see if it helps.

Right on.

At the moment, I've got a 165 main and a 27.5 pilot with the pilot screw at 1 turn out. The needle is the stock...don't recall if that the -97 or not.

I think I'm definitely lean on the main...possibly on the pilot too.

I've got the EV27 cam...what cam are you running? And do you recall what the stock needle position was?

Not sure about cam. I think it's stock or very mild. Bought the bike used and haven't gotten around to checking the cam out. The #97 is the stock needle. The needle has five groves in it and the center is the stock position. If your idle screw is only 1 turn out it sounds like the pilot jet maybe to rich. Somewhere around two turns out is supposed to be right. Did you read the Mikuni tuning manual? From 1/8 to 3/4 throttle opening is the needle. Above that is the main jet.Is it lean in that range or from 3/4 on?

Yes...several times. My grip has been marked with throttle settings for 4 days now. Hope itcomes off!

It was...last night I dropped in a -170 main (previously was a -165). Now I thing I'm fat from 3/4 on. A -167.5 might be the ticket there.

Too rich? I thought that meant it was too lean.

Tell me if I'm wrong (cause I really don't know for sure). I went from a -25 to a -27.5 pilot (slow) jet whichallows more fuel in at low throttle settings. Opening the pilot screw will allow more air in at low throttle settings. If I want to open the pilot screw up another turn to 2 turns out to allow more air in, I would also have to bump the jet up to a -30 to allow more fuel with it. Right???? What is not right about this? I be confused.

I'd like to get the idle circuit squared away so I can focus on the needle position.

If the needle let's more air in then your right. I was thinking the idle circuit was like a car carb. The idle screw meters the amount of air/fuel that was going in. I need to look a systematic of the idle circuit. That explains why the manual didn't make alot of sense. Sorry if I confused you on that. I feel stupid.Getting the idle straight before moving on is the way to go. Going up to a 30 would be right.

Yeah...I'm not sure if that's the right thinking either. I'm on my way to get another jet or two...maybe the shop can shed a little more light.

Did the shop shed any light on how the idle circuit works?

No. This was a Yamahahaha shop. The guy sounded like he know what he was talking about. He said that if the pilot screw is on the air cleaner side of the slide, that it is an air screw and opening it lets more air into the system. If the screw is on the engine side of the slide, that it is a fuel screw and opening it lets more fuel in the system.

He then proceeded to say that he has the same carb on one of his bikes and that it is a fuel screw.

Well...when I went out to verify I found that the screw is on the air cleaner side of the slide which would make it an air screw by his first comments and not the fuel screw like he swore it to be.

I left.

Now my bike is torn down for top end work...for the next month. Damn...sucks to be me. I might have to break out the ol Honda Scrambler.

That does suck. Especially with gas the way it is. It saves me six bucks a day to ride the bike to work.
