View Full Version : Baker 30/31 tooth transmission pully
markrumsfield 05-23-2007, 11:14 PM Any one tried switching thetransmision pully from stock 32 tooth to a 31 or 30 tooth on a cruisedrive 6spd? Just wondering how it worked out. I rarley use 6th gear, too tall for the type of riding I usualy do and it seems like a cheap/easy way to get more acceleration out of a stock 96" motor.
UltraKla$$ic 05-23-2007, 11:52 PM Here is an exerpt from (V)twin forums about the product:
Get more oomph from a throttle-wick on your 2007 stock Harley-Davidson. Our 30-Tooth or 31-Tooth transmission pulleys effectively ‘gear down’ the bike to optimize the performance in two major ways.
First, you’ll get more torque and power from the take-off gears. This remedies the common criticism of the new bikes being a little sluggish off the line for some riders.
Second, you can utilize the 6th gear at a slower, more reasonable highway speed for a more comfortable RPM. These pulleys bring the cruising gears down a notch for finessing your ride.
Performance details are as follow:
Increase Rear Wheel Torque (30T- 7% Increase / 31T- 3% Increase)
Cruising RPM 6th gear (75MPH) 30T @ 2830 / 31T @ 2756
No more lugging the motor in 6th gear at lower cruising speeds (60-70 MPH)
Note: Will require the use of a 1 tooth shorter belt (H-D p/n 40056-07) 2 ¼” special Pulley nut socket required for replacement available from Baker Drivetrain. p/n 94660-07BD
cjuetten 05-24-2007, 02:06 PM Wouldn't changing the pulleythrow off your speedometer. Do they sell a calibration box (?) to go with it?

Just checked my service manual and it says that there is a speed sensor located atop the tranny that takes readings off fouth gear inside the trans. Not sure how it works but I dont think changing the pully on the outside of the trans would through it off. I could be wrong though...
rare100thHD 05-25-2007, 01:51 AM Oh yes, changing eitherpulley on the beltwould throw off the speedometer.
Changingchain gears inside theprimary would not!!! This would be true for all new models
thatread the speedometerfrom transmission.Since they quit using the front wheel cable years ago!
Bellamacchina 05-25-2007, 04:41 AM 07 bikes have 34 tooth trans pully, a change to 30 or 31 reduce the overall gearing by 13% or 11% respectively. With the 30 tooth pulley you will be at about 3.15 total gearing which is exactly the number of the old 5 speed. Too much shifting involved cause you spread it over six gears instead of five. 32 pulley is a good alternative total gearing around 3.00, which AFAIK is not yet on the market. You need a shorter belt and a speedo adjuster for any of those changes

According to my 07 service manual the transmisson sprocket is 32 teeth. The compensating sprocket is 34 teeth however and the clutch sprocket is 46 teeth.

Yeah I guesse that would make sense. The speed sensor is reading off the transmission and saying you are going x miles per hr based upon the stock final drive gearing. Change the final drive gearing and x would be an innacurate measure of road speed. I think anyway this stuff is a little or a lot over my head...
The 2007 primary ratio is 1.35
the 31 tooth transwould give you a secondary ratio of 2.12
2.12 x 1.35 gives you a 2.82 final ratio
the 30 tooth trans would give you a secondary ratio of 2.2
2.2 x 1.35 gives you a final ratio of 2.97
I wish some one would make a 32 tooth compensating sprocket it would change the primary ratio back to 1.44 where it was on the 05 on down bikeswith the stock secondary ratio of 2.06 you would get a final ratio of 2.97.
It would be a lot less labor you would not have to pull the inner primary and you also would not have to pull the swing arm to change the belt
I sent an e-mail to Baker asking this but have not heard back
DRCLB 10-15-2007, 01:42 PM I'll keep you all informed. I'm having a 30 tooth installed Friday.

DRCLB 10-29-2007, 11:38 AM After having the 30 tooth installed, I found out two things:
Yes, you can feel the difference. The bike has more pep. I have not yet found myself shifting any more or less than usual.
It does throw the speedometer off. The faster you go the greater the difference. While cruising at 60 MPHaccording to thespeedometer, my Garmin shows the speed at 55 MPH.
Dalton 11-10-2007, 08:12 AM I called and talked with Baker, they do not have anything in the works right now for a 32 tooth engine sprocket. Revolution Industries does have a 30 tooth, but it replaces the complete compensator assembly, end result, being a direct drive from the engine to the trans. That pulley does come with a shorter chain to match and is $295.00. The stock final ration on the FLH's is 2.79:1. With a 32 tooth engine sprocket it goes to 2.97:1 and with a 30 tooth, goes to 3.15:1. I am waiting for a 32. I also talked with Primo and they are in the development stage of a new engine sprocket, but it is not yet available, but from what I was told, it would retain the compensator assembly.
Changing the trans pulley is not the way to go, IMO as it is costly, needs a new belt, and you mustpull the swingarm and primary to install, along with recalibrating the speedo. The engine sprocket is a quick change, pull the primary is all.
The other alternative would be up one on the trans sprocket and down one on the engine sprocket, would not require a new primary chain, but I know of no-one that has that in the works.
TOMCENTRAL 05-16-2008, 09:46 PM I talked with Bobby Woods the other day.He recommends changing the tall gearing on the 2007/08 dressers from 2.79 to 3.15 by using a stock(1 1/8inch) 70 tooth rear pulley from a 2006 dresser & a Andrews 30 tooth trans pulley. This change will require a speedo recalibration unit to get the correct speedo reading, but the stock belt can be used.My question:Has anyone here tried this?I think it would be a very nice improvement. Thanks in advance.Regards,Tom
TOMCENTRAL 05-17-2008, 01:35 PM I ordered a SIM 1 dakota digital speedo calibrator,Andrews 30 tooth trans pulley # 290306 & a HD 70 tooth rear pulley # 40217-04 for my 2.79 to 3.15 gear change.I will update after completion.Regards,Tom
Dalton 05-18-2008, 08:40 PM I have a 3.15 final gearing by going with the 30 tooth EVO Ind. engine sprocket. Yes, it does eliminate the compensator but so far I have not encountered any negatives doing it this way. Just got off the highway an hour ago, 350 miles at 70mph. 2900 rpm at 70 so not excessive at all. And much better pulling away from a light, and easily in 6th at 55 if I want to be.

you can utilize the 6th gear at a slower, more reasonable highway speed
WTF? If I wanted to do that I would have bought a Gold Wing....[8D]
