View Full Version : Plausible or BUSTED?!?!.......Lemon Pledge myth?

So what's the skinny on the use of Lemon Pledge on our bikes. Paint, chrome, plastic, lexan, and everything else the bikes have on them?

Any long term disadvantage?....ie..yellowing, fading, dulling, etc...etc....to the aforementioned "parts"?

Any caustic hidden ingredient in the Pledge?
[sm=ummmmokay.gif]

I'm having a hard time buying into thisPledge stuff for use on myscoot.[sm=alcoholic.gif]

I have used Pledge on my motor several times and it works really well. Makes it look new. I have not used it on paint, so I can't comment on that. I have wiped overspray off of chrome and it really shines. You don't have to use Lemon though, it comesunscented, too.

Here's the official reply regarding the use of Pledge on painted motorcycle surfaces:

Thank you for your e-mail. We always appreciate hearing from our consumers.

Unfortunately, PLEDGE® Lemon Furniture Polish has not been tested for use on painted
motorcycle finishes so we cannot recommend it. Please use the product according to label
directions as we cannot guarantee how the product will perform for uses or purposes other
than those we have tested.

My Question is: Why use pledge when there are many other tested and safe products to use?

Best Regards!

Back in the late 1960s when I was workingat aHonda/Triumph shop we used Lemon Pledge on new and used bikes alike to keep 'em shiny on the showroom floor. This ain't anything new, and it works just dandy.

I've been using Pledge on bikes, boats etc. since the 60's. It pre-dates the "instant detailers."

I said this in another thread, but think of it. Pledge is made for "fine" furniture which has leather, vinyl, plastic, clear-coated (lacquered) brass, chrome, rubber, wood, glass, formica - you name it.

It's fantastic stuff. It's cheap at Wal-Mart or wherever. Easy on and off.

Lemon adds a cleaner but I don't use that. I said it before but I don't want anyone telling me my bike is a "lemon." Naw, I just don't want my bike to smell like lemons. I also can't say whether the citric acid would hurt anything.

BTW, it makes my leather look wonderful. Not greasy like some products.

Just my $.02, but one of my bikes is 20 years old and has no problems...

I have been using it on my RKC windshield since I read about here a few months ago. I spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it off. It worked great on the bug guts that were plastered on after an 800 mile ride.

Around two or three lifetimes ago, when I 'horsed' my own Peterbilt around the Mid-West...We used to use Pam on the front ends to prevent the bugs from sticking. Spray it on, let it dry...Buff off the excess.

We used the unflavored...But I imagine if your southern, you can use the butter. Or if you're from the 'old country' you can use the olive oil flavor....

I luckily, 'got over it' years ago. Now I just wash, cleaner/wax, and ride. Damn, it's just a friggin' motorcycle. I don't get that anile on my Vette.

Well I just tried it on my bike for the first time after reading about it here. Took me 10mins and it looks better than times that I used all of those "tested and safe products". It even covered up some minor swirls in the black paint and made the black insert on my tank look better than ANYTHING I have ever tried. I'll keep you updated on how it holds up. P.S. I didn't even use "real" lemon pledge, but the cheap wal-mart brand......

Yep, probably. But it looks great every time you look at it in any light.

If I lived close to you I'd sure let you detail my bikes, but the "detailers" around here hurry too much and I've seen them PUT swirls in bikes.

So, lacking time, energy and motivation, this is the best I can do under the circumstances. I have three Harleys and I just want to ride.

I about 50/50 on the Pledge. I did find that it made a greasy, streaky mess on clearcoated paint. However, on single stage paint with a little oxidation, it dida great job putting on a shine. I tested it agains Mequiar's Quick Detailer, Magic Mix FastWax, andPigSpit. None of them really left a shine on fadedpaint compared to thePledge. However, I'm sure that the shine is temporary and will be gone at the next washing.

OK, OK, I'll try it. I don't use Lemon Pledge. I use old fashioned regular Pledge and have forever. I don't find that it is greasy or that it attracts dust. Maybe it's the lemon oil?? The citrus oil is just in there as a cleaner and the bike is already clean.

However I'll give the britemax a try. Someone said they found it at a NAPA store. It claims to repel dust. If britemax is better (it better be for the money, lol) I'll stick with it.

If not, I'll send you folks the bill for the 15 bucks. :D

I have used lemon pledge on my motorcycle and my mustang. Take your detailer spray and apply it to an area of your car and use lemon pledge on another area and see what area is the most slick.
Now I am not saying that it is better but have used it on cars 30 years ago. Lemon Pledge is all that I use on my 2006 HD and 2005 mustang now. Seems to repel dust also.

I've been using pledge since the 60's but not lemon pledge. Just regular Pledge. I don't like the citric acid or the slippery feeling of the lemon. Lemon is a cleaner.

It's cheap enough. You might try regular Pledge for the heck of it...

Used it for 9 years on my Sporty. I just traded her in and got lots of compliments from the dealership on how good the paint job looked. I've used it on the paint, the seat (not a lot), the chrome, the wind screen, my helmet and helmet visor. Like some of the other guys have said, it's dirt cheap and works like a charm.

I think that whoever told you thatis BS-ing you, brah. Surf wax is a hard wax that softens from the friction createdby rubbing it on your surfboard. The wax then hardens when the cool water comes in contact with it, giving you traction to stand w/out slipping.

I used the Pledge (white can) on my Vivid black FXD. It worked better than the spray detailers and was very easy to wipe on, flip the micro cloth, and wipe off/buff. Would use it on a daily basis on all painted finishes, so there was not a lot of build up. I would not use it on an overly dirty bike. That requiers a wash and wax. I have used many other high end products on my bike, and yes, they also work great. But the Pledge is just much easier for everyday use. No problems ever on any surface. I did stay away from the seat, grips, boards, ect. I now use is on my new FLTR, but not as much, as the paint is still pristine and I don't want to rub it very much. I also use a clean CA duster (small) with a very light touch to take off the surface dust only. Again, no rubbing.

I've been using Pledge for years. Orange Pledge just smells better to me.
Tried it on my Harley when I first got her but it soaked in and looked streaky. Turns out the paint didn't have a lot of wax on it. Pledge makes the wax shiny and buffs out great. Pledge on clear coat doesn't work as well. The secret might be to keep a good coat of wax on to protect the clear coat and use Pledge to protect the wax.
On the windshield it fills the pours in the plastic and that stops the bug guts from digging in deep.

Okay, I have a confession to make. I have never tried Pledge on any of my bikes, but I am willing to give it a try. Having said that, I was in a boot store several years ago while wearing my blackResistol XXXX (4x) cowboy hat. The gentleman there reshapedmy hat and afterwards used lemon Pledge on it. It did a great job on the hat which contains beaver hair and helps keep it looking purdy. :-) Oh....and I always felt like a walking Lemon Head afterwards.

Per a tip from a biker friend, I started using Pledge when I boughtmy brand new '69 Norton Commando. That wasa loooooooooong time ago and I've never seen it hurt anything but...

It's no substitute for a good wash if that's what's needed ora good high-quality wax as a base underneath (yep, you guessed it) a quick shot ofPledge every day or two until the next wash-job or wash/wax job.

It's cheap and easy to use, works on anything I've ever tried it on (never have tried it on tires), and it does seem toevaporate after a few dayson a black RK inFlorida sun ;).

I shake may head in amazement at the time guys spend washing and detailing their bikes. I've never washed my bike. I detail it out with pledge (buy the commercial size at Home Depot). Takes about 45 minutes; It would be less if I didn't have spoked rims. Use on everything including the tires. One cleaner period. Use old tee shirts and separate ones for the chrome, tins, and tires.

This was popular subject on the VTX Forum. Pledge worked great on the VTX, must be all the plastic parts but it seems a little greasy on the HD. I've used it to quick detail in a pinch, also on boots and leather coats. But I once tried the citrus pledge presoaked wipes, ( on the honda) they suck, don't use them! But regular pledge or lemon is ok, I think we're better off sticking with Meguires or other good detail product.

So help me out here - Pledge in the UK is sold as a furniture polish being good for wooden surfaces. I've not come across a wooden Harley as yet - though that doesn't mean to say there isn't one.

However we do use Mister Sheen here and the lemon version does smell great - especially if you haven't washed in a couple of days!
