I've got a 07 street glideit has a nasty clatter at about 2300 rpm up to 2800 rpm or 65 MPH up to 78 MPH in 6Th gear it goes away when i roll in on the throttle but comes back at cruise, it only happens when its good and warmed up not cold.
it's got a stage 1 air cleaner with ecm upgrade and SE mufflers.the dealerships say this is normal??also say I'm lugging it.cant be only clatters in 6Th at those rpms.it also seems it got worse after the torque shift recall.can anybody shed some light on this and how can i fix it? Help
CRAMBONE: I've noticed the same thing. If it's clattering and I roll onTONS of throttle it goes away. My reasoning on this is that the high load actually bottoms the compensator sprocket in one direction, not allowing it to rebound from the spring pack. What I'm trying to say is it's in a solid condition and it can't hammer back and forth between powerpulses.Ease up on the power and it clatters again. I would think that no two bikes will clatter at the same gears or rpm combinations . Too many variables. Windshields , two up, air temp all change the range somewhat. In my case first and second are quiet. Not enough load. Get some in third if rpm is too low but most in forth and fifth. Can't hear it in sixth due to wind noise but should in theory be made to do it. As in your case, only when the bike has been ridden a bit and oils are hot. Sure, if you run the engine at high rpms in all gears it's quiet. That's Harley's answer. To me, it's a lame excuse on their part for **** poor engineering that shouldn't have made it out the door.

Most have it in 5th gear much worse than in 6th. When hot, after riding for a hour or more without stopping they will do it in more gears andat higher rpms. This is when the compensator springs arehotter andweaker, whichmakesthe compensator bottomall the way out.No one canunderstand why after 30 or more years with basically the same compensator assy why the motor cochanged the design of it.
rare100thHD: I'd bet on the taller gearing and longer stroke engine made the other one inadiquate for the job. I don't think the new one is up to it either. These washers suck for springs. In time they get weak and the noise will happen easier and louder. That's been my experience with similar designed units.

Go to a heavier primary oil (20w50 fossil engine oil) and 85w140 gear oil for the tranny. This quietened my clatter considerably, and now 6th gear is nearly quiet. Some clatter still exists in 5th, but it is muted and doesn't get obnoxious above about 2000 RPM's. The whine in 5th is still there, however. I'm using Castrol GTX 20w50 for the primary and Royal Purple 85w140 MaxGear for the tranny, but I think viscosity is more important than brand for squelching the clatter.
I notice 5th gear whine mostly after reading it on here.before I thought its just another hd sound. now at 5k+ after reading alot about the clatterI think ive isolated it on my bike too or has started? And I have a good way to explain it. Its like that sound when your on one of those old wooden roller coasters when its pulling your car up the first hill. Does this sound like it? or maybe I need to adjust clutch(5k)?
jerryaThe comp unit is two pieces that form a v ramp and are held together with spring pressure. It's function is to take out the sharp impact loads from the power stroke of the engine by the v sections sliding up each other during impulse and returning from the spring pressure that holds them together. This should be extremely small amount of movement. If the spring pack is not heavy enough , the movement in the ramps is too large causing a metal to metal clack sound from hitting the back end (outer)of the unit. Consider it a spring that has coil bind. It is in fact hammering metat to metal at that point. Cold oil will give it a cushion to hammer on but as the oil heats up it is lost . I have yet to hear clacking from the tranny but due to gear lash it adds to overall slop for a jack hammering effect. Thick oil may reduce this slop and artificially quiet the compensating sprocket giving the impression it's the tranny making the noise . Problem is still there , but you've given it less room to really get violent. There is not enough slop in the tranny anywhere to be able to , on it's own to make that kind of racket. The whine is of no concern and won't hurt anything.
