Hello gentlemen thanks for reading / responding to this post.
I am considering buying a 1965 Panhead from a friend. It is a survivor with original paint, and mostly original parts. I would say that it is over 95% original. The bike is beautiful and has no issues, cosmetic or mechanical. It is truely a once in a lifetime machine. I have 2 2007s and I have really wanted a 1965 Panhead for a long time. I had a 1964 DuoGlide when I was younger and poorer and had to sell. I have the advantage of really wanting the bike to keep and I trust the seller completely, he is my closest friend. lowriderfxr..Owned my 65 FLH since 1970. Paid almost $3,500.00. Seemed like a lot of money at the time. The guy I bought it from was the original owner and sold it to me on the promise I would never chop it (something everyone was doing back then it seems). Took a serious ribbing from lots of my friends cuz I owned this "huge bagger". Now they can't believe I own an almost stock 65 (almost 200K miles later, rattle can paint job, modern day "round tires, couple of top end rebuilds, chains, and the usual gaskets and HD 60wt oil). Plan to restore it in two years...my retirement gift to myself.
As far as worth, they seem to go for around $12-14K on a really clean rebuild. They can only be original once (seems like your is very close), and there are very few truly "resotred" 65s out there, just many very nice rebuilds. If it it 95% original, I say get it, do the required maintenance (owning a 64 Glide you obviously know/remember what it takes) and ride it. And depending on the 5% of parts that are not original, you should probably be able to find what you need.
And since it does not have to be your daily rider, you can put as many/few miles on it as you please.

Wow she is a beauty!! I own a 65 as well and that is a fine example! Treat her good and ride her!

lowriderfxr, damn that is one sweet looking 65. Defintiely looks like a survivor. Just push the button and go!
Sites I go to....
#1 hydra-glide.net. Very informative, lots of knowledge, posts almost daily, primarily site for pans and old flatheads
#2 harleytechtalk@groups.msn.com, covers the broad range from old to new with site devoted to pans; not as many posts perhaps as the above but still good technical information, user friendly too
#3 harleychatgroup.com, covers the broad spectrum as well but with fewere posts on pans.;they include pans under a broad subforum of pans, knuckles and flatties.
#4. shovelhead.us, this site is devoted to shovels, but since I own a 65, and the 66-69 were primarily just an upgraded top end, I log on and look for stuff that might be related. (that and I want a late 70s'early 80s stock FLH!)
Good luck this weekend. Oh...from looking, what the heck is the 5% that is not stock?
