Hello to everyone in the Harley Davidson forums. I'm excited to say that the 1929 D Model that my father-in-law purchased in New Zealand will be on my door step in Southern Oregon on Monday 6/4. It was cheaper to send it to my house than all the way to Wyoming. So, I'll be working on it for the time being and trying to get it going. And, to be honest, I'm excited but totally out of my league. I've only been riding motorcycles for the last 5 years and am just now starting to feel comfortable working on my 06 Street Rod V-Rod engine. So far I have found some great information here and I'm sure I'll be asking many more questions.

Does anyone else own or know of someone that owns a 29 D Model? This bike is supposedly running and rideable. It has been "restored" already. Not sure what that means, but we'll know more on monday. Here are a few pics that were sent to us from New Zealand.

Looks nice.  Leave the paint alone if it's original, even though the tank has that dent.

You might consider joining the Antique Motorcycle Club of America.

Thanks for the suggestions I doc! Any thoughts on how I might be able to tell if the paint is original...my first inclination is that it is not, but are there some things I can look for? I will definitely check out the Antique Motorcycle club of America.

Here is the first picture I have after it arrived. I went to the freight company to take it out of the crate. Tons of fun!

Man,it looks great.I used to own 29 JD,and painted it the same colour. If you ever strip the tank off the paint, you'll see it's hand made, lots of tiny dents from the hammer, but don't do it,it looks great.Mat

The JD looks amazing!  Don't try to re-paint the tank. You can get that dent out using paintless dent removal tools. If you haven't mastered that technique find a shop that specializes in paintless dent removal. A skilled tech will massage that dent away even on that heavy tin on the old JD.

Not really sure how you can tell.  But if someone took the time to take the tank and fenders off to repaint, then look at the frame and see if the paint is different.  If they took the time to repaint the frame than they should have redone the engine and other parts.   I would say look to see if things look "old"  The bike is almost 90 years old.

One other thing you can do is look for people who specialize in JD's.  When you get that old it gets tough.  there are very few people who do VL's so I had to hunt for info.  You might want to call Harbor Vintage in VT or drop an email to Steve Slocombe at info@vlheaven.com .  He might be able to help you tell about the paint.

Either way, the bike looks great and I wouldn't touch it.

Nice export though.  I like the looks of the front tire stand.  Most home models didn't have that.

That looks really good. Of course it still runs, it's a Harley! Notice the dual headlights, most people today think that japan.inc invented that 10 years ago.
