Default 110 problems?

This is what a member of another CVO forum had posted.

Here is my situation. Took my 07 FLHTCUSE2 to the dealer a few days ago to get my 575 cams and new pushrods installed. They called me today and advised me that my bike needed an entire new motor due to a pinion gear (don't know what it is) being out of specs. They noticed the problem after removing the cam cover. Dealer said if the problem is not repaired I will have major issues in the future so I am without a bike for this weekend unless I pay them for a rental (that blows). They said the new motor should be in by Mon or Tues of next week and I should have the bike back towards the end of the week. My questions are:

1. Why didn't I notice anything wrong with the bike during the past 2200 miles ? It has been running and idling perfectly.

2. Could this pinion gear have been damaged by me in any way ? If so, how ?

3. Could the dealer have possibly damaged it and is not telling me the truth ?

This problem with the pinion gear is talked about in great detail on that forum and a few motors have been replaced. Any one around here know of this and if so what do we lucky 110 owners do.The forum isCVOHarley.com and all the talk is under Twin Cam.

Well - my bike is in the shop for the 3rd time due to oil leaking. The 1st 2 times, they replaced gaskets. This time, they are replacing the cylinder heads. Your fortunate they are replacing the engine and that it is only taking a few days. I am feeling screwed by my dealership here in Henderson as they have had my bike this time since May 12th. The cylinders have been backordered and finally suppose to be shipped today but I am not holding my breath. I have also talked to Harley Customer Service about the POS that I bought from them and all I got was the standard garbage about - we have to take small steps to repair your bike. Why didn't I stop at the Honda shop before I bought this bike? As someone else pointed out to me... I love her.. but you have to be able to count on her.

Enzo,
sorry to hear about your problem but unfortunately it is a problem in the field that HD has not mentioned. I am a service manager at a dealership and we were introduced to the pinion problem when a couple traveling from Texasbike lost all oil pressure. The runout on the pinion was so excessive that it finally broke the oil pump. When we called HD they asked for the runout and once it was given they said "yeah that's about what we've been seeing." Nice job HD. We did get a engine as all was better but I think the factory should be letting dealers know of a possible problem. Hope all goes well for you.

gurutech,

Is this pinion problem just on the 110 motors?

Also what pressure should I see on a 96 at idle and at cruising at 2700rpm?

Thanks,

Enzo, it sucks that you are having the problem but it sounds to me that your dealer is stand up. Replacing the motor instead of just fixing it is a good thing, especially if its going to take only a few days!

Smitty,
Not to sound too confident, but I guarantee you that if it were my bike, I would have a new engine.
I've been in business my entire life, and I can tell you that an unhappy customer who spills his venom is bad news...
The easy route for them would be to install a new engine rather than deal with my bad attitude inside of their dealership for hours on end. They can make it happen...
Don't give them options.
Tell them to take that baby step bull$sit and feed it to someone else...

Talk about oil leaks my bike is in the shop for oil leaks too when they pulled it apart they said it looks like a porosity problem so the oil is leaking though the casting of the metal. I feel LIVID about the whole thing All I want to do is ride! F*#king sh** man.

Damm...........

so far I feel like I dodged a bullet............
the only leak I had was from the bolt between the cylinders, it was seeping just a little bit, I tightened that bolt and everything is looking good.....for now.

I thought the 110 engine was basically a bored and stroked version of the 88 and 96 engines?
and uses the same engine case. So why would there be so many oil leak problemson the 110 and not on the 88 or 96 engines?

This is truely sad,its been a yr now and theystill cant seem to get it right. With the 08s out now and the possibility of them being in same boat, how long doyou expect to wait for a replacement motor?Chances are the new one will be the same, have the ability to self destruct the same as your last one unless you change your riding style and even that may not be enough. These bikes are big bucks, harleys top models and they are running them off.
