Default UPDATE...Poorman's S/E Air Cleaner

UPDATE, UPDATE...

Special thanks to NutandBolt who said that if you go to Zanotti you can get these parts for even less money than your local dealer.

I priced out the parts and they have everything below except for the gasket and K&N Filter.

Total $32.44 plus $10.38 shipping = $42.82

I've been searching ebay for a deal on a S/E air cleaner and after being outbid a few times, I got to thinking about the following.

Why not buy the parts required to switch over to the high flow air cleaner. I downloaded from the internet the instructions for installing the Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner and called the local dealer for prices on the parts shown in the parts drawing.

1. Backplate - 29478-05A - $12.50 Zanotti - $9.66
2. Gasket - 29583-01- $1.30 N/A
3. Plug, Breather (2) - 29557-05 - $7.05 = 14.10 Zanotti $4.26 ea
4. O-Ring (2) - 11292 - $.95 = $1.90 Zanotti $ .71 ea
5. Stud, air cleaner mounting (3) - 29447-99A - $3.50 = $10.50 no change
6. Screw, button head (3) - 3938- $1.50 = $4.50 Zanotti $ .78 ea
7. K&N Air Filter HD-0800 - $39.00 N/A

Total $83.80

So I don't get the S/E trim ring but I rather pay this amount than the $139.95 plus taxes at the dealer or the average going price on ebay of $115.00.

Has anyone researched this before ?? Am I missing something ??

Please advise...

I bought my SE Trim plate from HD dealer for my Sporty.....cost $7.95....adding that to what you spent already still makes it a better deal than buying the whole kit.

Not sure but somrthing don't seem right. It seems to me HD would catch on and up the prices for the parts.
Something must be missing, but I wouldn't know. Didn't go with the SE Kit.

04RoadKing,

I also question the price difference between the kit itself and parts only scenario. It could be that the HD filter element carries the bulk of the cost. I'm only paying $ 39.00 for the K&N filter.

Does anyone know how much the HD filter element would cost ?? I could call the dealer tomorrow and post the price unless someone has the info available.

I seem to recall the price for a backplate was $39. I was probably looking up parts for an '06 Dyna, so maybe prices vary.

Jamie,

I verified these prices at two dealers, there's no mistake. They do sell a chrome back plate for $39.95 and maybe that's what you remember seeing ??

Yep, I bet it was the chrome one. I've been wondering about this issue because I need to upgrade my AC. I'd rather have the KN filter and I want to use a cover from Zippers, so I've been looking for a cheap way to assemble everything I need. This is good info. Thanks.

You can buy the SE AC kit on Ebay from Eastern Performance Cycles or directly from their website for $79. I just bought and installed it on my 06 FLSTI...IT ROCKS!!!

PS.... and you get the SE insert ring.

How about just taking a sawsall and opening up the airbox. I seem to remember that the stock backing plate for the air cleaner has a small air inlet so try opening it up for more flow.
go out and have fun
