Default Shovelhead questions

Guys,
Can you help me out with these questions(1981 FXE)?

1. On the transmission, where do you add new fluid? I am not sure where to add it back. Is it the large screw by the kick start? How much does it hold? How can I check the level?

2. Does the finaldrive chain have a automatic oiler? My chain always looks well oiled after I ride and I get a few drops of oil on the floor about where the chain meets the primary/frame?It looks like the chain it throwing oil on the frame as it turns and itpools and then drips a day later.

Thanks!

Default RE: Shovelhead questions

wbogley. tranny takes 1 1/2 pints. The large plug behind the kicker is where you add it. There shoud be a small plug on the face of the kicker cover that will take a 3/16 allen to loosen. When adding oil set the bike level.

The final drive does in fact have a chain oiler. The rear chain oiler adjustment screw is located on the oil pump just below the feed line the oil tank (this applies to stock aluminum pumps). About the only time you need to adjust the chain oiler is if it appears the rear chain is not getting enough oil. Sounds like yours is and is not over oiling. Adjustment procedure if you need it...

1. Loosen rear chain oiler adjustment screw.
2. Turn adjustment screw in until it seats lightly (and that means definitely what it says "lightly" becuase you definitely do not want to mess up things by gorilla tactics). Count and record number of turns required.
3. Remove adjusting screw by turning it out completely
4. Blow out the chain oiler orfice w/ compressed air.
5. Reinstall adjusting screw, then turnit in until it seats lightly.
6. Back out adjusting screw amount recored in step 2.
7. Oil should flow about 2-3 drops per minute and should occr w/ screw backed out about 1/4 turn.

And now you know why they say Harleys always mark their spot...

Default RE: Shovelhead questions

Thanks panz4ever!

So when the tranny is full it should run out the small 3/16 allen hole with the bike level?

As for the chain, I am fine with the oil on it. I was just trying to figure out where it was coming from. Sounds like the system is working fine.

Thanks Again!
